Book Synopsis The Power of Wellbeing by : Clive Elliott

Download or read book The Power of Wellbeing written by Clive Elliott and published by . This book was released on 2021-11 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Power of Wellbeing" is about reassessing our institutions, systems, and values and re-purposing them in an uncertain post-pandemic world. It is about engineering positive change to achieve a better world-"for the people"-where most of the population can thrive and prosper, while building and maintaining the core values of equality, trust, and empathy. I hope to show how a shift in perspective that has blossomed in our small island nation might be the catalyst for far more sweeping change in bigger countries like the United States and the United Kingdom. I hope that it will help awaken the world to the fragility of our shared humanity at what may well prove to be a unique time in history. The book compares and contrasts what is happening in New Zealand and the United States. Perhaps the timing is propitious. The Biden-Harris Administration's goals of working towards racial and economic equity, expanding healthcare accessibility, and restoring America's global standing in the world, so America can once again be that beacon of hope, the shining city on a hill, suggests that, at least for now, America is ready and willing to learn more about wellbeing, now that equilibrium is being restored by the new administration. The Administration's plan includes giving access to free community college in certain cases, and more generally clean water, access to broadband, and universal childcare to most if not all Americans. For the wealthiest country in the world and the standard that liberal democracies aspire to, these goals should be achievable. The problems we face are significant. However, the society that I posit is a good one "of the people and for the people." This is not just a laudable goal, it is a prerequisite for communities in which most people can thrive and prosper. It means having leaders who exist and strive for the benefit of the majority, not just the ruling class and their cronies while the average citizen slips further behind.

Book Synopsis Blueprint by : Robert Plomin

Book excerpt: A top behavioral geneticist argues DNA inherited from our parents at conception can predict our psychological strengths and weaknesses. This “modern classic” on genetics and nature vs. nurture is “one of the most direct and unapologetic takes on the topic ever written” (Boston Review). In Blueprint, behavioral geneticist Robert Plomin describes how the DNA revolution has made DNA personal by giving us the power to predict our psychological strengths and weaknesses from birth. A century of genetic research shows that DNA differences inherited from our parents are the consistent lifelong sources of our psychological individuality—the blueprint that makes us who we are. Plomin reports that genetics explains more about the psychological differences among people than all other factors combined. Nature, not nurture, is what makes us who we are. Plomin explores the implications of these findings, drawing some provocative conclusions—among them that parenting styles don't really affect children's outcomes once genetics is taken into effect. This book offers readers a unique insider’s view of the exciting synergies that came from combining genetics and psychology.
