Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How economic analysis can help us design economic policies to address the looming challenges of global warming As scientific and observational evidence on global warming piles up every day, questions of economic policy in this central environmental topic have taken center stage. But as author and prominent Yale economist William Nordhaus observes, the issues involved in understanding global warming and slowing its harmful effects are complex and cross disciplinary boundaries. For example, ecologists see global warming as a threat to ecosystems, utilities as a debit to their balance sheets, and farmers as a hazard to their livelihoods. In this important work, William Nordhaus integrates the entire spectrum of economic and scientific research to weigh the costs of reducing emissions against the benefits of reducing the long-run damages from global warming. The book offers one of the most extensive analyses of the economic and environmental dynamics of greenhouse-gas emissions and climate change and provides the tools to evaluate alternative approaches to slowing global warming. The author emphasizes the need to establish effective mechanisms, such as carbon taxes, to harness markets and harmonize the efforts of different countries. This book not only will shape discussion of one the world's most pressing problems but will provide the rationales and methods for achieving widespread agreement on our next best move in alleviating global warming.

Book excerpt: Most people have suffered through headaches, and attempted to treat themselves with various common remedies. Certain pain relievers attack only the pain and often do nothing for the cause of the pain. So our headaches come back, pounding, again and again and again ... Wouldn't it be great to get off the merry-go-round of poor health? Or, if you're feeling fine now, begin the simple practices that can help you maintain your good health for a lifetime? But chances are you don't want to live for the rest of your life on some radical diet. Where can you look for good information to help you begin a life of health and well-being? Dr. Igor Cetojevic was trained in both Western and Eastern medicine. Together with his partner, Francesca Pinoni, he has created the book you need to start on your journey, appropriately titled: Your Health. The key to good health is not radical changes, it is balance. Further, the way to achieve balance is different for every person, depending upon your location, temperament, size, and even the season of the year. You'll easily understand this information and then be able to choose the foods and activities you need for optimum health. The result is that, perhaps for the first time in your life, you'll be responsible for you own health. You will be able to discover how to avoid headaches through behavioral and nutritional changes. You'll also discover the secrets of gemstones and how they can be used to heal and keep you healthy. You'll learn about the chakras and chi energy and how they are involved with health. You'll find out that there are fields of electromagnetic energy all over the world and how they can affect your sleep (and what you can do about it). You'll even learn the functions of your major organs in a way that is simple and even fun. If you are looking for a way to stay healthy, this is the first book you need.

Book excerpt: Western liberal democracy has a dual foundation of limited government implementing the will of the majority and protecting individual autonomy within a sphere of fundamental rights. Under the rubric of universal human rights Western societies take for granted that they tolerate all religions and treat all persons equally. However, through globalization and immigration Western societies are increasingly finding non-Christian people in their midst. This pluralism is causing polities to rethink fundamental notions of the boundaries of religious freedom, equality, and state neutrality. Three countries whose systems are based on the Western liberal democratic philosophy and which are religiously pluralist—the United States, France, and the Netherlands—are reacting in different ways. The politics of the hijab and burqa lie at the intersection of the political and legal spheres. Consequently, the political and legal spheres have each attempted to enforce differing versions of the concepts of equality and neutrality. A cross-cultural and cross-national survey of judicial decisions and legislative action in these countries demonstrates how each is balancing individual rights and communal bonds, and adhering to or retreating from previously accepted human rights norms for women and religious practices.
