Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new kind of style book with the inspiring and empowering message that “true style is self-acceptance,” profiling stylish influencers and celebrities who defy the cookie-cutter looks of today’s fashion magazines. The mother-daughter team behind the enormously popular websites StyleLikeU and What’s Underneath profile trendsetting artists and creatives of all ages, body types, races, and genders to embrace how self-expression and self-acceptance are the most important means of achieving personal style. Featuring people with original and creative style such as actress Lea DeLaria, who embraces her butch style with whimsy and humor; model and Miley Cyrus–muse Melanie Gaydos, who lives with a genetic disorder and who sees beauty as a state of being that she has achieved; designer Betsey Johnson, who continues to exert creative genius into her 70s; or Tallulah Willis, who has learned to keep a positive self-image in today’s negative tabloid culture. A wealth of photographs reflects each person’s unique look, while interviews reveal how their journey affects and informs their style. Throughout the book, the authors include inspiring manifestos such as: “Disentangle Style from Fashion”; “Dress to Express Your Inner Spirit”; “Beauty Is a State of Mind”; and “Turn Your Struggles Into Strengths”. By illustrating that personal style emanates from one’s comfort with oneself, this volume powerfully demonstrates that true style is what’s underneath.

Book excerpt: Have you ever felt like a stranger in your own life? After a cancer diagnosis at age 21 and many subsequent experiences lived from a place of fear and anxiety, author Samantha Paige did for far too long. Over time, she learned to regularly ask herself: "How can I own my life and make my life my own?” By taking time for honest introspection and acknowledging these moments of disconnect, she began to make some significant decisions, or last cuts, to create a life with greater congruence between her inner and outer worlds. Through her own process of healing, Paige outlined seven universal steps to the last cut process. In LAST CUT, she vulnerably shares from her own story and frames these phases of self-discovery and growth in a clear framework so that anyone facing a moment of questioning within their own lives can relate to a shared journey.

Book Synopsis What is History? and Other Late Unpublished Writings by : Eric Voegelin

Download or read book What is History? and Other Late Unpublished Writings written by Eric Voegelin and published by University of Missouri Press. This book was released on 1990 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains the most significant pieces of unpublished writing completed by Eric Voegelin during an important time of his career. Spanning the period from the early 1960s to the late 1970s, these selections supplement the body of work Voegelin published after the appearance of the first three volumes of Order and History in 1956 and 1957. The five texts included here are "What Is History?" "Anxiety and Reason," "The Eclipse of Reality," "The Moving Soul," and "The Beginning and the Beyond." In their introduction to the volume, Thomas A. Hollweck and Paul Caringella place these writings in their proper context and discuss the ways in which they reveal clues to the evolution of Voegelin's thought. In "What Is History?" Voegelin considers the development of a transcendent structure of history while simultaneously rejecting the notion that history can have a universal meaning. "Anxiety and Reason" focuses on Voegelin's critically important theory of historiogenesis, which links events in pragmatic history with legendary and mythical events leading back to the beginning of the cosmic order. In "The Eclipse of Reality," Voegelin presents a critique of modernity by analyzing the work of Sartre, Schiller, Comte, and others. "The Moving Soul"--a "thought experiment" inspired by a remark Henry Margenau makes in The Nature of Physical Reality--attempts to reformulate the connections between physics and myth. The most important of these essays is "Me Beginning and the Beyond." Here Voegelin meditates on the universality of experience formed by the tension of existence under God. Publication of these previously unpublished writings will enable scholars to trace the genesis of many of the concerns that occupied Voegelin during a period in which the conception of his main work was undergoing frequent and perhaps fundamental changes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ever wondered why your ceiling is shaped like the arches in a gothic cathedral? Or why your offi ce building looks so different from its neighboring counterparts? The ABC of Style invites you to explore the many different architectural and decorative interior styles from their ancient origins to the 1940s. Take a journey through history to see how the French aristocracy styled their palaces and castles to the simple designs of the Dominican monastic churches during the middle ages. Often, political changes implicate a stylistic transformation. Thus, the different European styles were frequently named after a sovereign or a historical period (Renaissance style, Medieval style). Until the end of the nineteenth century, the stylistic mutations of the time were generally based on the tastes of the royalty. Stylistic expression was, therefore, an affirmation of power.
