Book excerpt: “Will appeal to aviation enthusiasts and anyone curious to know how this modest, likeable woman smashed her way through an enormous glass ceiling.” —Surrey Life magazine Yvonne Pope Sintes only ever wanted to fly. But in the 1950s, very few women were allowed into the male dominated world of aviation. Her dream was to join the ranks of the Royal Air Force and, despite an awareness of the pitfalls that might await her, she embarked upon her mission. Her story, told here for the first time and in her own words, is one characterized by gritty determination against the odds. A career trajectory marked by such landmark achievements as becoming the first female Air Traffic Controller with the Ministry of Aviation, the first female civil airline pilot in the UK, and the first female jet airline captain in Britain are relayed in this inspiring autobiography. Bomb scares, engine failures and other perilous episodes punctuated Yvonne’s experience and she received a raft of prestigious awards over the course of her career. All her challenges and triumphs are revealed in this lively narrative for a truly rousing and engrossing read.

Book excerpt: FLIGHT OF THE FUGITIVES Introducing Gladys Aylward Six-year-old Mei-en screamed in terror when she realized her gypsy owner was about to sell her to a foreign lady. Times were hard in the mountainous region of China in 1934, and orphans were often sold for pennies. But foreigners in China were considered "devils," and Mei-en thought surely the little woman in Chinese clothes would eat her for supper! But this time Mei-en's new owner was the compassionate and respected missionary, Gladys Aylward. One day outside her new home, Mei-en saw wonderful silver "birds" flying in the sky-but her delight turned to dread when they began dropping bombs that exploded all over the city. Suddenly their lives, and those of nearly a hundred orphan children, were in terrible danger! With the enemy in hot pursuit, their only escape is over the mountains!

Book excerpt: To develop alternative solutions to Air Force problems relating to signal transmission in the presence of ionization, AFCRL undertook an extensive investigation of techniques for modifying reentry plasmas. The program included laboratory tests and a series of reentry flight experiments. This report describes the flight test of one successful technique, Teflon ablation, a passive approach that requires no internal support systems. A reentry vehicle fitted with a Teflon-coated nosecap was instrumented to measure antenna impedance mismatch, interantenna coupling, signal attenuation, and charged-particle density. The probe data showed that the local boundary-layer electron density decreased by as much as a factor of 200. The Teflon coating effected a 25-dB decrease in S-band signal attenuation. High-power antenna breakdown was modified by the presence of the ablation products. Details of the vehicle design, flight dynamics, and ablation, are presented, and the results of the Teflon-ablation technique are contrasted with those of a successful liquid-injection technique that was tested on a previous flight.
