The dress sewn for the Western context did not fit the Muslim world and social movements therein; however, social analysts work on the same model in their efforts to understand the East. The Gulen movement, which flourished first in the "East" but now spread across a hundred countries, is not immune from such a bias. This book on the Gulen movement is an effort to deconstruct this bias and the author points to a need for a comprehensive look on Muslim social movements. The author scholarly treats the Gulen movement in cultural, sociological, and religious standpoints, while laying out the main concepts he finds relevant with the movement's far-reaching spread across the world. As concisely phrased in the title, the Gulen case is an interesting encounter of the "tradition" and "modernity" both in the person of Fethullah Gulen and in the education and dialogue initiatives of the movement. The author sees in Gulen an embodiment of wisdom that peacefully harmonizes the benefits of the modern age and the heritage of a long past. Book jacket.

Book excerpt: Every year, right before Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement, there is a cultural war in certain Jewish neighborhoods over a ceremony called Kapporos, in which a chicken is slaughtered just before the holy day. The animal rights people show up claiming, "Meat is murder!" while the Orthodox and Hasidic Jews who practice this ceremony accuse the activists of antisemitism and violating their freedom of religion. Epithets fly and confrontations occur across the barricades, but nobody is really listening to each other. Rabbi Gershom seeks to build a bridge of understanding between these two warring camps. On the one hand, he opposes using live chickens as Kapporos, and, like many other religious Jews before him, advocates giving money to charity instead. But on the other hand, he is himself a Hasid who understands and believes in the kabbalistic principle of ""raising holy sparks"" so central to the ceremony. In fact, he says, it is that very mysticism that has led him not to use chickens for the ritual.

Unfortunately hardly any readers exist which bring together a body of knowledge on the themes, issues and debates which inform and animate research and teaching in African Studies particularly on the African continent. This becomes even more important when we consider the need for knowledge on Africa that is not Eurocentric or sensationalised, but driven from internal understandings of life and prospects in Africa. Dominant representations and perceptions of Africa usually depict a continent in crisis. Rather than buying into external representations of Africa, with its 'lacks' and aspirations for Western modernities, we insist that African scholars in particular should be in the forefront of promoting understanding of the pluri-lingual, overlapping, and dense reality of life and developments on the continent, to produce relevant and usable knowledge. Continuing and renewed interest in Africa's resources, including the land mass, economy, minerals, visual arts and performance cultures, as well as bio-medical knowledge and products, by old and new geopolitical players, obliges African scholars to transcend disciplinary boundaries and to work with each other to advance knowledge and uses of those resources in the interests of Africa's people.
