Book excerpt: Over the last decades, the interior of cars has been constantly changing. A promising, yet unexplored, modality are large stereoscopic 3D (S3D) dashboards. Replacing the traditional car dashboard with a large display and applying binocular depth cues, such a user interface (UI) could provide novel possibilities for research and industry. In this book, the author introduces a development environment for such a user interface. With it, he performed several driving simulator experiments and shows that S3D can be used across the dashboard to support menu navigation and to highlight elements without impairing driving performance. The author demonstrates that S3D has the potential to promote safe driving when used in combination with virtual agents during conditional automated driving. Further, he present results indicating that S3D navigational cues improve take-over maneuvers in conditional automated vehicles. Finally, investigating the domain of highly automated driving, he studied how users would interact with and manipulate S3D content on such dashboards and present a user-defined gesture set.

This book was released on 2019-09-04 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A guide to the applications of holographic techniques for microwave and millimeter wave imaging Real-Time Three-Dimensional Imaging of Dielectric Bodies Using Microwave/Millimeter Wave Holography offers an authoritative guide to the field of microwave holography for the specific application of imaging dielectric bodies. The authors—noted experts on the topic—review the early works in the area of optical and microwave holographic imaging and explore recent advances of the microwave and millimeter wave imaging techniques. These techniques are based on the measurement of both magnitude and phase over an aperture and then implementing digital image reconstruction. The book presents developments in the microwave holographic techniques for near-field imaging applications such as biomedical imaging and non-destructive testing of materials. The authors also examine novel holographic techniques to gain super-resolution or quantitative images. The book also includes a discussion of the capabilities and limitations of holographic reconstruction techniques and provides recommendations for overcoming many of the limitations. This important book: • Describes the evolution of wide-band microwave holography techniques from synthetic aperture radar principles • Explores two major approaches to near-field microwave holography: Using the incident field and Green's function information and using point-spread function of the imaging system • Introduces the "diffraction limit" in the resolution for techniques that are based on the Born approximation, and provides techniques to overcome this limit Written for students and research associates in microwave and millimeter wave engineering, Real-Time Three-Dimensional Imaging of Dielectric Bodies Using Microwave/Millimeter Wave Holography reviews microwave and millimeter-wave imaging techniques based on the holographic principles and provides information on the most current developments.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book includes some very recent applications and the newest emerging trends of hyper-spectral imaging (HSI). HSI is a very recent and strange beast, a sort of a melting pot of previous techniques and scientific interests, merging and concentrating the efforts of physicists, chemists, botanists, biologists, and physicians, to mention just a few, as well as experts in data crunching and statistical elaboration. For almost a century, scientific observation, from looking to planets and stars down to our own cells and below, could be divided into two main categories: analyzing objects on the basis of their physical dimension (recording size, position, weight, etc. and their variations) or on how the object emits, reflects, or absorbs part of the electromagnetic spectrum, i.e., spectroscopy. While the two aspects have been obviously entangled, instruments and skills have always been clearly distinct from each other. With HSI now available, this is no longer the case. This instrument can return specimen dimensionalities and spectroscopic properties to any single pixel of your specimen, in a single set of data. HSI modality is ubiquitous and scale-invariant enough to be used to mark terrestrial resources on the basis of a land map obtained from satellite observation (actually, the oldest application of this type) or to understand if the cell you are looking at is cancerous or perfectly healthy. For all these reasons, HSI represents one of the most exciting methodologies of the new millennium.
