Book excerpt: Upon Napoleon’s defeat at Waterloo, the nobility of Europe met in Vienna to divide up his empire. After a year of conniving and scheming, (along with lavish parties, opera, and winter games), they finally patched together a crazy-quilt map of Europe without regard for the welfare or ethnicity of its citizens. The resulting instability and endless confl icts, coupled with the lure of freedom in America, ledto a mass exodus from Central Europe. However, the trip to America was fraught with suffering and mortal danger. Many were jailed or pressed into military service for trying to leave their homeland without permission. Thousands died during the ocean crossing. To pay their passage, some were forced to indenture themselves, which amounted to near-slavery in many cases. Some were turned back after the harrowing crossing. Some were cheated by unscrupulous hucksters because they could not understand English. Many were forced into hazardous employment such as appallinglydangerous coalmining. This tale deals with two young lovers who make the heart-wrenching decision to escape to America from Schleswig-Holstein in 1835, knowing they will never see their families again.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ever since Max Weber and Frederick Taylor, public organizations have been told that effective practice lies in maximizing rationality through science. Yet science-based management reforms have had only marginal impact on performance. People in entry-level positions possess knowledge from direct experience of the work, management knowledge is often science-based and distanced from the work, and appointed top executives struggle to join bureaucratic rationality with political exigencies. Knowledge and Power in Public Bureaucracies: From Pyramid to Circle offers fresh thinking about public organizations, arguing that conflicting forms of knowledge may be found within the bureaucratic pyramid. Answering the question of why management reforms over the past century have failed on their own terms, this book examines the existence of conflicting forms of knowledge within public bureaucracies, how these contradictory perspectives interact (or fail to interact), and the ways in which these systems preserve managerial efforts to control workers. Authors Carnevale and Stivers argue that bureaucratic rationality is not the “one best way,” as Taylor promised, and indeed, there is no one best way or model that can be deployed in all situations. The bureaucratic pyramid can, however, be made more effective by paying attention to circular processes that are widespread within the hierarchy, the authors argue, describing such circular processes as “facework.” This book will serve as an ideal supplement to introductory public administration and organizational theory courses, as well as courses for mid-career professionals, helping to frame their work experiences.

Tourists are heading to Savannah for St. Patrick’s Day–and Jack is racing through tunnels below the city to the edge of Hell itself to hold off a plot posed by the double-dead and demented. But Jack must also hold off his own desire for Connie Jones, the beautiful cop he turned into a vampire slayer. Connie, her blood running hotter than she can handle, can’t imagine the games that Jack is playing with her body and her mind, or that the other monster she’s falling in love with is all part of his devious plan. Welcome to the world of Jack McShane, a blue-eyed vampire who knows how crazy things can get–once you get a little taste for blood.
