Book Synopsis The Sun in Your Eyes by : Deborah Shapiro

Download or read book The Sun in Your Eyes written by Deborah Shapiro and published by HarperCollins. This book was released on 2016-06-28 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A New York Times Book Review Editor's Choice The Wall Street Journal calls The Sun in Your Eyes one of "the season's most exciting fiction reads." One of Vulture's "7 Books You Need to Read This July" Harper's Bazaar picked it as one of "Spring's Hottest Breakout Novels." Ann Hood says it's "the perfect summer book." A witty and winning new voice comes alive in this infectious road trip adventure with a rock-and-roll twist. Shapiro’s debut blends the emotional nuance of Elena Ferrante with the potent nostalgia of High Fidelity, in a story of two women—one rich and alluring, the other just another planet in her dazzling orbit—and their fervid and troubled friendship. From the distance of a few yards, there might be nothing distinctive about Lee Parrish, nothing you could put your finger on, and yet, if she were to walk into a room, you would notice her. And if you were with her, I’d always thought, you could walk into any room. For quiet, cautious and restless college freshman Vivian Feld real life begins the day she moves in with the enigmatic Lee Parrish—daughter of died-too-young troubadour Jesse Parrish and model-turned-fashion designer Linda West—and her audiophile roommate Andy Elliott. When a one-night stand fractures Lee and Andy’s intimate rapport, Lee turns to Viv, inviting her into her glamorous fly-by-night world: an intoxicating mix of Hollywood directors, ambitious artists, and first-class everything. It is the beginning of a friendship that will inexorably shape both women as they embark on the rocky road to adulthood. More than a decade later, Viv is married to Andy and hasn’t heard from Lee in three years. Suddenly, Lee reappears, begging for a favor: she wants Viv to help her find the lost album Jesse was recording before his death. Holding on to a life-altering secret and ambivalent about her path, Viv allows herself to be pulled into Lee’s world once again. But the chance to rekindle the magic and mystery of their youth might come with a painful lesson: While the sun dazzles us with its warmth and brilliance, it may also blind us from seeing what we really need. What begins as a familiar story of two girls falling under each other’s spell evolves into an evocative, and at times irrepressibly funny, study of female friendship in all its glorious intensity and heartbreaking complexity.

Book Synopsis With the Sun in My Eyes by : Mikaya Heart

Download or read book With the Sun in My Eyes written by Mikaya Heart and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2008-12 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This unusual book illustrates the life and wisdom of the Northwest healer and psychic, Char Sundust. Mikaya Heart was asked to write this book by Char, on the instructions of the spirits who are always at Char s side, offering invaluable advice. For two years, Mikaya followed Char around everywhere she went, re-visiting her childhood haunts and delving into her shamanic healing work. A skilled interviewer, she spent many hours with Char s family, friends, students and clients, gleaning in-depth information, then spinning this into a gripping narrative. Char was trained in Native American shamanic healing methods from the age of fifteen, and as a young adult she quickly began to heal others, radiating love and light. Now she does psychic readings to help people access the full potential of life; she does house blessings, which involve cleansing the energy of a space, removing stuck energy that might be manifesting in the form of ghosts, poltergeists, or simply unpleasant vibrations; and she does soul retrievals, which are about re-uniting an individual with parts of herself that she may have lost as a result of traumas on life s journey. Her greatest gift is being able to recognize and shift old, outmoded energy that is attached to people, things or places. Mikaya has been able to describe in detail the extraordinary healing that occurs in Char s work, with vivid concrete details of the different realms, entities, power animals, energies, archetypes and spirits that Char relates to on a daily basis. This is not only a delightful adventure story, it is also educational, chronicling in detail how healing of all kinds can be addressed on levels other than the physical. Char is a particularly gifted psychic, but all human beings can access a sense of the vastness of all-that-is, to a greater or lesser degree, and can choose to work with that sense, fine-tuning it to specifics. Everything that we see as solid was in the form of pure energy before it became visible to our physical eyes. This book explains, in clear detail, how one healer learned to work in the arena of energy to change what is being manifested. Others can follow in her path, or make their own. Even for those who choose not to be healers, the understanding that the world of physical form is only a tiny portion of what is occurring around us is profoundly life-enhancing. You cannot read this book without realizing that the potential of being human is huge, and the ability to choose joy lies within us all.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In analyzing the parallels between myths glorifying the Indian Great Goddess, Durgā, and those glorifying the Sun, Sūrya, found in the Mārkaṇḍeya Purāṇa, this book argues for an ideological ecosystem at work in the Mārkaṇḍeya Purāṇa privileging worldly values, of which Indian kings, the Goddess (Devī), the Sun (Sūrya), Manu and Mārkaṇḍeya himself are paragons. This book features a salient discovery in Sanskrit narrative text: just as the Mārkaṇḍeya Purāṇa houses the Devī Māhātmya glorifying the supremacy of the Indian Great Goddess, Durgā, it also houses a Sūrya Māhātmya, glorifying the supremacy of the Sun, Sūrya, in much the same manner. This book argues that these māhātmyas were meaningfully and purposefully positioned in the Mārkaṇḍeya Purāṇa, while previous scholarship has considered this haphazard interpolation for sectarian aims. The book demonstrates that deliberate compositional strategies make up the Saura–Śākta symbiosis found in these mirrored māhātmyas. Moreover, the author explores what he calls the "dharmic double helix" of Brahmanism, most explicitly articulated by the structural opposition between pravṛtti (worldly) and nivṛtti (other-worldy) dharmas. As the first narrative study of the Sūrya Māhātmya, along with the first study of the Mārkaṇḍeya Purāṇa (or any Purāṇa), as a narrative whole, this book will be of interest to academics in the field of Religion, Hindu Studies, South Asian Studies, Goddess Studies, Narrative Theory and Comparative Mythology.
