Book excerpt: In a chorus of voices David Grossman's The Smile of the Lamb tells the story of Uri, an idealistic young Israeli soldier serving in an army unit in the small Palestinian village of Andal, in the occupied territories, and his relationship with Khilmi, a nearly blind old Palestinian storyteller. Gradually as the violent reality of the occupation that infects both the occupier and the occupied alike merges with the old man's stories, Uri, captivated by Khilmi's wisdom, tries to solve the riddles and deceits that make up his life. Originally published in Hebrew in 1983, The Smile of the Lamb is a novel of disillusionment and a piercing examination of injustice and dishonesty.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite the tragic reality of the continuing Israeli-Arab conflict and deep-rooted beliefs that the chasm between Israeli Jews and Israeli Arabs is unbridgeable, this book affirms the bonds between the two communities. Rachel Feldhay Brenner demonstrates that the literatures of both ethnic groups defy the ideologies that have obstructed dialogue between the two peoples. Brenner argues that literary critics have ignored the variety and the dissent in the novels of both Arab and Jewish writers in Israel, giving them interpretations that embrace the politics of exclusion and conform with Zionist ideology. Brenner offers insightful new readings that compare fiction by Jewish writers Amos Oz, A.B. Yehoshua, David Grossman, and others with fiction written in Hebrew by such Arab-Israeli writers as Atallah Mansour, Emile Habiby, and Anton Shammas. This parallel analysis highlights the moral and psychological dilemmas faced by both the Jewish victors and the Arab vanquished, and Brenner suggests that the hope for release from the historical trauma lies—on both sides—in reaching an understanding with and of the adversary. Drawing upon the theories of Walter Benjamin, Jacques Lacan, Sigmund Freud, Emanuel Levinas, and others, Inextricably Bonded is an innovative and illuminating examination of literary dissent from dominant ideology.

Download or read book Creating a Judaism Without Religion written by S. Daniel Breslauer and published by University Press of America. This book was released on 2001 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines how some modern and contemporary Jewish thinkers and writers have imagined a Judaism without the boundaries and restrictions that go by the name of "religion." The book offers scholarly insights into some Jewish thinkers-notably Martin Buber and Eugene Borowitz, some Jewish writers-in particular the poet Hayyim Nahman Bialik and the Yiddish author I.L. Peretz. The study also introduces more contemporary thinkers and writers such as the postmodernist Jacques Derrida, the contemporary Israeli novelist David Grossman, and the young Israeli poet Ilan Sheinfeld. While of scholarly interest, the ten chapter work has more general appeal as a way of conceiving Jewish living outside the restrictions of religion. One third of the book suggests a way of looking at God and theology as part of the process of living rather than as fixed realities. Another third explores how Jewish culture can be liberated from the restrictions of nationalism and parochialism. The final third focuses on a postmodern ethics of the self that emerges from face to face meetings with others. The author contends that the future Judaism has created will be pluralistic, diverse, and oriented toward the future.

Book excerpt: This book is a result of 12 amazing women who accepted the challenge and made a decision to allow the World to take a peek "Beyond the Smile" they wear so well. Several months ago, The Holy Spirit gave me the title of this book. I took time and wrote down ten titles to include "Beyond the Smile", but wanted to give the co-authors an opportunity to help select the right one. Although I knew what God had already spoken, I sent them all ten titles and ask that they each select the three top choices. God had spoken again as the top choice was "Beyond the Smile", after the second round of voting. Let's go a little deeper on the choice in naming the book. The women in this compilation of amazing stories tell their truths of smiling while hurting and wounded. I sometimes call it "serving while hemorrhaging." Many women can relate to living their daily lives while much is going on within, but yet they smile. There are many times that we endure betrayal, negativity, and fear, yet we still smile. Most of the times, those closest to us don't even know what is going on within the depths of our souls. These women of strong FAITH, who I affectionately call Queens, have emptied themselves onto paper and has discovered the therapeutic necessity of telling their truth to bless other women. The launching of this book was as though we each released a thousand doves. It is a symbolization of freedom and self-awakening. God created for us, a sister circle of support for one another that will live forever. We each found strength and confidence in prayer and the love that has been displayed birthed victory in abundance. Sit back, grab you warm throw blanket and a glass of your favorite drink as we go "Beyond the Smile" of my co-authors Ashley Brittney, Consuelo Allen, Detral Williams, Kenyatta Collins, LaQuanda Plantt, Mia Colemon, Michelle Hudson, Renata Triblett, Sharon P. Jones, Zen Watson, Tonya Clinton, and Ynwanda S. Market.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Jewish-Israeli theatre is a complex and developed system in which the dispute with the Palestinians constitutes just one of the important components in its repertoire; while the Palestinian theatre, both within and outside of Israel, is being consolidated. This work brings together these two approaches by relating to the Palestinian theme as it appears in the Jewish-Israeli theatre and by attempting to characterize the Palestinian theatre in general.
