This book was released on 2009 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Conflict in Northern Ghana appears to be increasing in amplitude and frequency and its effects are getting more devastating. It is the view of this book that The Government of Ghana and civil society organisations involved in aspects of conflict management have approached peace issues in the region with an inadequate understanding of the local issues that divide and unite the people, or using sufficient resources to pre-emt conflict. In 2003 The Mole V summit was held in Damongo to discuss strategic directions for comprehensive development and poverty reduction in Northern Ghana as a mechanism for supporting conflict management. It is the aim of this publication to contribute to the proposed plan by suggesting past and current conflict management resources and mechanisms which could be employed. The suggestions are informed by surveys, which are oulined in the book, of particular conflicts in the three northern Regions of Ghana between 2006 and 2008 - their histories, causes and efforts and their resolution.

Download or read book Chiefs, Priests, and Praise-Singers written by Wyatt MacGaffey and published by University of Virginia Press. This book was released on 2013-03-13 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In his new book, the eminent anthropologist Wyatt MacGaffey provides an ethnographically enriched history of Dagbon from the fifteenth century to the present, setting that history in the context of the regional resources and political culture of northern Ghana. Chiefs, Priests, and Praise-Singers shows how the history commonly assumed by scholars has been shaped by the prejudices of colonial anthropology, the needs of British indirect rule, and local political agency. The book demonstrates, too, how political agency has shaped the kinship system. MacGaffey traces the evolution of chieftaincy as the sources of power changed and as land ceased to be simply the living space of the dependents of a chief and became a commodity and a resource for development. The internal violence in Dagbon that has been a topic of national and international concern since 2002 is shown to be a product of the interwoven values of tradition, modern Ghanaian politics, modern education, and economic opportunism.

Book excerpt: This book investigates the praise poetry genre of the Dagombas of northern Ghana. The art of drumming, performed by court figures known as drummers, is at the heart of Dagomba culture, and is central to this book. These questions, in addition to how we can channel panegyrics to positive uses, are the issues this book addresses directly. The contents presented in this book will help foster a cross-fertilisation of ideas between the oral artists, their patrons, and academics; and also engender economic activity for the artists.
