Download or read book The Strategic Poet written by Diane Lockward and published by eBookIt.com. This book was released on 2021 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Strategic Poet: Honing the Craft focuses on the craft of poetry and is based on the belief that craft can be taught and the best teacher of craft is a good poem. This book assumes a knowledgeable reader, that is, one who already knows the language of poetry and already practices the craft. This book is organized into thirteen sections, each one devoted to a specific poetic strategy. While only thirteen strategies are used for organizational purposes, the reader will find many additional strategies referred to and discussed within the sections. There is a progression from one section to the next, but each section also stands alone, so the reader or teacher can follow the order of the Contents or move about freely among the sections. Each section begins with a Craft Talk solicited from a well-known poet with a clear mastery of craft. Each Craft Talk is followed by Model Poems and Prompts. Each Model Poem is followed by an analysis of its craft elements, especially its use of the section's strategy. One Model Poem in each section is followed by a Commentary from the poet who wrote the poem and is focused on a particular strategy used in the poem. Each of the thirty-six Prompts is followed by two Sample Poems written to the prompts. These seventy-two poems demonstrate that the prompts are not mere exercises and can produce terrific poems. Each section ends with three Bonus Prompts. There thirty-nine additional prompts were contributed by thirteen contemporary poets. These short prompts provide additional practice with the strategies, can be used multiple times, and should lead to some good poems. Contributors include 114 of our best contemporary poets. This book is suitable for use by poets working independently, by poets in writing groups, and by teachers in the classroom.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recently appointed as the new U. S. Poet Laureate, Ted Kooser has been writing and publishing poetry for more than forty years. In the pages of The Poetry Home Repair Manual, Kooser brings those decades of experience to bear. Here are tools and insights, the instructions (and warnings against instructions) that poets—aspiring or practicing—can use to hone their craft, perhaps into art. Using examples from his own rich literary oeuvre and from the work of a number of successful contemporary poets, the author schools us in the critical relationship between poet and reader, which is fundamental to what Kooser believes is poetry’s ultimate purpose: to reach other people and touch their hearts. Much more than a guidebook to writing and revising poems, this manual has all the comforts and merits of a long and enlightening conversation with a wise and patient old friend—a friend who is willing to share everything he’s learned about the art he’s spent a lifetime learning to execute so well.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Poems that delight in discovering the comic, sorrowful, empathic, and spiritual in what is often overlooked. In Practicing to Walk Like a Heron multiple-award-winning Michigan poet Jack Ridl shares lines of well-earned wisdom in the face of a constantly changing world. The familiar comforts of life—a warm fire in winter, a lush garden in summer—become the settings for transcendent and universal truths in these poems, as moments of grief, sadness, and melancholy trigger a deeper appreciation for small but important joys. The simple clarity of Ridl's lines and diction make the poems accessible to all readers, but especially rewarding for those who appreciate carefully honed, masterful verse. Many of the poems take solace in nature—quiet deer outside in the woods, deep snow, a thrush's empty nest in the eaves—as well as man-made things in the world—a steamer trunk, glass jars, tea cups, and books piled high near an easy chair. Yet Ridl avoids becoming nostalgic or romantic in his surroundings, and shows that there is nothing easy in his celebration of topics like "The Letters," "But He Loved His Dog," "A Christmas List for Santa," and "The Enormous Mystery of Couples." An interlude of full-color pages divides Ridl's more personal poems with a section of circus-themed pieces, adding visions of elephants, trumpets, tents, sequins, and sideshows, and the uniquely travel-weary perspectives of jugglers, trapeze artists, roustabouts, and clowns. Practicing to Walk Like a Heronunabashedly affirms the quirky and eccentric, the small and mundane, and the intellectual and experiential in life. This relatable and emotionally powerful volume will appeal to all poetry readers.

Book Synopsis Instead of a Shrine by : Eiléan Ní Chuilleanáin

Download or read book Instead of a Shrine written by Eiléan Ní Chuilleanáin and published by Poet's Chair: Writings fro. This book was released on 2019 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Eil an N Chuillean in is one of contemporary Ireland's most beloved poets. Her debut collection won the prestigious Patrick Kavanaugh Poetry Award, her poems are included on the final exam taken by all Irish secondary school students, and, in 2016 she was appointed the Ireland Professor of Poetry by Irish president Michael D. Higgins. It is this last honor that forms the backbone of Instead of a Shrine, the seventh installment in University College Dublin Press's Poet's Chair series. The three essays collected in this book examine a diverse slate of poetry-related topics and explore the forces that affect the work of every practicing poet. The first piece pays tribute to the Irish poet and translator Pearse Hutchinson (1927-2012), a valued friend and colleague of N Chuillean in's, as well as to the languages he used and the impact they had even on readers that did not fully understand them. The second looks at the often disparaging treatment of poets in fiction, ranging from P. G. Wodehouse to Flann O'Brien. In the book's final essay, N Chuillean in returns to her lifelong academic interest in the poetry of seventeenth-century England and calls on the work of poets as diverse as Bishop Henry King, Walt Whitman, and Thomas Kinsella to explore poetry's relation to the ceremonies surrounding death. Elegantly designed and masterfully written, Instead of a Shrine offers a unique opportunity to return to--or begin engaging with--the dynamic world of poetry via the intellect of one of Ireland's modern masters.
