Book excerpt: 'The chilling plot will keep you spooked and thrilled to the end' Closer When a skeleton is discovered on a Devon smallholding, DS Wesley Peterson, a keen amateur archaeologist, is intrigued by the possibility that it is a Viking corpse buried in keeping with ancient traditions. But he has a rather more urgent crime to solve, when a Danish tourist is reported missing. Wesley finds disturbing evidence that the woman has been abducted. His boss Gerry Heffernan believes that Ingeborg's disappearance is linked to a spate of brutal robberies and that she witnessed something she shouldn't have. But is her disappearance linked to far older events? For it seems that this may not have been Ingeborg's first visit to this far from quiet West Country backwater . . . Whether you've read the whole series, or are discovering Kate Ellis's DI Wesley Peterson novels for the first time, this is the perfect, gripping mystery if you love reading Elly Griffiths and Ann Cleeves.

Book Synopsis Boats by : Dilwyn Jones

Download or read book Boats written by Dilwyn Jones and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 1995-01-01 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing on archaeological and literary evidence, Dilwyn Jones examines the importance of the boat in Egyptian ritual and belief, as well as in everyday life. The sun god was thought to travel across the sky in a solar boat, and Egyptians believed that the deserving might join the god Osiris in his divine bark after death. Boats played an important part in funerary ritual; models were often placed in tombs to provide the deceased with safe passage through the Winding Waterway in the underworld. Also, boats are frequently depicted in tomb paintings. The Nile has always been a vital transport artery for Egypt and boats the principal means of travel. Early papyrus skiffs gradually gave way to wooden craft of increasing size and sophistication, ranging from fishing boats and barges to seagoing warships, splendid ships of state and enormous obelisk barges used to transport stone to temples and monuments. Dilwyn Jones traces the development of the different types of boats and the techniques of their construction through the Old, Middle, and New Kingdom periods. The book is illustrated with photographs of boat models and paintings and with line drawings.

Book excerpt: The beauty of the words and the striking simplicity of its sentiment has made this one of the most inspired messages of comfort and hope for those who have suffered loss. This is the first publication as a book for a poem that has been recited at memorial services for over a century. What is Dying? is a moving meditation on death, with a reassuring power that speaks directly to those who have been recently bereaved, and millions of people have been comforted by its serenity and acceptance. The poem speaks movingly and directly with the voice of faith that sustains us during a time of grief. Ben Ecclestone's sensitive illustrations perfectly complement the words of Bishop Brent's poem.
