Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Species are disappearing from the earth at a rate of hundreds, and perhaps thousands, of times greater than every before witnessed. According to many scientists, this rapid destruction will lead to irreversible changes in the earth's ecosystem. The Expendable Future provides a comprehensive and critical evaluation of the politics of biological diversity in the United States and of state and federal policies on endangered species from the early 1960s to the present. Drawing on congressional hearing and debates, previously unpublished public opinion surveys, interviews with state officials and employees of the Department of the Interior, and internal documents from this and other government agencies, Tobin provides an in-depth analysis of the policies on endangered species and the policy relationships among the different units of government involved in implementation. He examines the resources that are available for the protection of endangered species and the way in which those resources are matched to the priorities. Tobin also discusses the processes by which species are classified as endangered, how these species' critical habitats are determined and protected, and the successes, and mostly failures, of current recovery programs.

Little is known about Melaquin, for every explorer who’s landed there has disappeared. It’s come to be known as the “planet of no return,” and the High Council has made a habit of sending troublesome admirals there in an attempt to get rid of them. It’s clear that this is intended to be Ramos’s last mission, but she doesn’t plan on dying, no matter how expendable she may be.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the cold war with the Soviet Union, an influential American in military intelligence rewarded Ian McGregor for saving his daughters. McGregor was enrolled in an exhausting training program to exploit his many attributes, and to further his benefactor's career to the status of "general." The Expendable Man is a taut thriller loaded with spies and political intrigue. Old hardliners in the Kremlin formed a clandestine group to oppose Gorbachev's politics as being premature. To prove their point, they schemed with a drug cartel and other criminal gangs to undermine the American economy and make President Reagan's idea of laying a protective canopy over America look like a ridiculous boast. McGregor frustrated their plans in the past, before becoming an agent for an elite organization named C.A.T. (Countries against Terrorism). He changed his name, occupation, and location to marry the woman he loved, only to be tracked by two killers intent on obeying a long-standing order to assassinate him. McGregor is forced to revert to his old identity and becomes an even more formidable adversary to settle scores with the mafia and to unmask a dangerous terrorist. Will he become The Expendable Man?

Though the focus of the essays is regional, the co-editors' introduction and conclusion will make connections between the Northwest forests as a case study and scientific and policy dilemmas generally.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book studies R. Buckminster Fuller’s World Game and similar world games, past and present. Proposed by Fuller in 1964 and first played in colleges and universities across North America at a time of growing ecological crisis, the World Game attempted to turn data analysis, systems modelling, scenario building, computer technology, and information design to more egalitarian ends to meet human needs. It challenged players to redistribute finite planetary resources more equitably, to ‘make the world work’. Criticised and lauded in equal measure, the World Game has evolved through several formats and continues today in correspondence with debates on planetary stewardship, gamification, data management, and the democratic deficit. This book looks again at how the World Game has been played, focusing on its architecture, design, and gameplay. With hindsight, the World Game might appear naïve, utopian, or technocratic, but we share its problems, if not necessarily its solutions. Such a study will be of interest to scholars working in art history, design history, game studies, media studies, architecture, and the environmental humanities.
