Book excerpt: Contrary to what students, and society, are conditioned to think, obtaining a college degree does not automatically result in a job, let alone a dream career. In the last year, alone, half of college graduates are either jobless or underemployed in positions that don’t fully use their skills and knowledge. Authors Tori Randolph Terhune, a gainfully-employed young college graduate herself, and Betsy A. Hays, a college professor, show readers what they can do in college to successfully pave the way for future employment in Land Your Dream Career. The authors provide eleven easy-to-follow strategies for effectively using time on campus to start building a career. Terhune and Hays leads students through content designed to help students set themselves up for success, without focusing on grades or papers. The eleven steps include tips about how students can become experts in their fields, build their brand, get involved in and outside the classroom, allow for wiggle room, network, follow the 75/25 rule (75% thinking, 25% doing) and use new media, such as social networking and blogging, to launch their career. Any student looking for that connection from college to getting to their dream career needs to read Land Your Dream Career. Terhune and Hays make it known that landing a good job is not impossible!

Book excerpt: All parents want their children to be successful in college. For most, success means that their children graduate from college with a good job or are accepted to Graduate School. This book is for parents who want to help their children achieve the success they desire in college and beyond. Clearly, there are paths that lead to those two goals, paths that are often unknown or unclear to parents and students alike. For that reason, the author describes and emphasizes the key factors that lead to college, employment and career success. Parents also receive much useful advice on how to help their children capitalize on their natural talents, find their stride and pursue their dreams. The early chapters quickly take readers through the years prior to college, so parents with children who are not yet in college can determine if they are ready and what they need. In fact, some students may benefit from taking a year off after high school. For parents with children about to enter college or already in college, the author has included the information, tools, techniques and suggestions that both parents and students need. Parents will learn how students can avoid the ugly side of college life, how students can select their major and career direction, the three areas in which students must excel, the universal success skills students should develop, the 18 myths that students believe, the importance of accomplishments, the value of preparation and much more. Most importantly, parents will learn to play an effective supporting role in student success. Each chapter of this book covers a topic that all college parents should understand and address. With the information provided, parents will have the ability to help their children chart a course that can significantly improve their chances for success, during and after college.

Book excerpt: Members of the PRHS Class of 1959 are the fortunate recipients of something called friendship. For us, it all started when we entered school in Pearl River, New York and became Pearl River Pirates. The friendships that were formed became stronger as we moved from one grade to another, participated in school activities and celebrated the successes of our class and our classmates. Most certainly, our class is blessed in that those early friendships have remained with us for more than sixty years, seventy for some. Through the years, our class members have stayed in touch with our teachers; came to one anothers assistance when needed; stopped in to visit classmates when we have traveled; communicated via email, telephone, and text messages; held regular five-year reunions, now two-year reunions, cruises, and picnics; and attended monthly breakfast meetings, along with monthly luncheons and periodic pizza nights. We amaze other classes when we show our strength at award and recognition nights for our class members. This unity exists only because something special exists in our hearts. Memories of our class hijinks, activities, and successes have helped create a closeness that comes easily. We are always glad to see each other and greet each other with caring hugs and are quick to present a big smile and a kind word. This warm solidarity exists not only because we like each other, but also because of the fact that there is a small group of classmates who have worked hard to plan and carry out the reunions, events and the get-togethers that have kept us in constant touch with one another. It should be understood that our long-lasting, class-wide friendships did not just happen. We all worked at them. For us, friendship, performance and hard work are the hallmarks of our class. They make us proud.
