Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This second volume of Ricardo Iznaola’s monumental Summa Kitharologica trilogy is, according to its author, “a playbook for self-guided discovery” in matters related to the expressive interpretation of music. Its 26 short pieces in all keys, in versions for solo guitar and guitar duo, present the reader with an ample array of musical styles and technical procedures that serve as so many opportunities for exploration of the fascinating and complex growth process that brings the player from basic acquaintance with a score to masterful assimilation of its contents. As the distinguished British guitarist and pedagogue Jonathan Leathwood remarks in his Foreword to the book, at this point, the player “is so at one with the score that they can stretch it – and occasionally contradict it – without ever betraying its essential meaning,” attaining that “desirable imprecision” proposed as a marker of ultimate mastery by cellist and pedagogue Pedro de Alcántara, as Leathwood reminds us. The musical contents are complemented by brief epigraphs preceding each solo miniature, ranging from the factual to the poetic, whose purpose is to anchor the music in an evocative, affect-charged context that may hopefully stir the player’s imagination, as will the excellent recordings by Laura Husbands and the Arabesque Duo. Additional commentaries in the Working Notes section, in the appendix, and in the afterword deal with topics as diverse as mental practice, synesthesia, musical peak experiences, prosody and rhythm theory, the hazards of a performing career, and the performer’s need for (and the challenges of) introspective self-assessment. Throughout, the book advocates, as its core thesis, the importance of a questioning stance: “what if…” as the path to discovery through changes in points of view, a consistently variable perspectivist approach, in which comparison and evaluation of multiple alternatives, rather than prescriptive pre-ordained solutions, is taken as the foundation for true understanding. Volume 3 of Summa Kitharologica, Handbook of Comparative Fingering Analysis, completes the set with a comprehensive analytical overview of guitar fingering strategies since the early 19th century.

This book was released on 2015-10-06 with total page 171 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ricardo Iznaola's long-awaited Summa Kitharologica (vol. 1) is the culmination of three decades of deep exploration of the guitarist's playing mechanism and is the most comprehensive presentation of his thinking about these matters to date. Structured in three chapters, Chapter 1 surveys basic anatomy and physiology of the upper limb, with additional sections discussing general pedagogical considerations. Chapter 2, devoted to the right hand, presents detailed information regarding digital joint behavior in general and as applied in actualactivity on the guitar, as well as introducing an analytical system to study anddescribe positional attitudes, or `frames', adopted by the hand in the course ofplaying. Chapter 3 discusses at length left-hand physiomechanics, taking the concepts of shifting and mobility as fundamental categories encompassing all aspects of left-hand technique. Twenty-six anatomical figures, over fifty photosand more than sixty musical examples, with access to online video amply illustrate the text. In the spirit of ground-breaking scientific pioneers, celebrated performer and pedagogue Ricardo Iznaola offers the guitar world the first volume of SummaKitharologica, a comprehensive and highly insightful examination of guitar technique in a remarkable mixture of soaring erudition and down-to-earth practical and applicable approaches to the instrument. Like a modern-day Charles Darwin of the guitar, his insatiable passion for discovery, keen eye of the `naturalist' and relentless analytical mind have carefully and methodically recorded previously little-known or little-recognized observations, relationships and nuances about the natural principles at work in artful guitar playing. For guitar instructors, serious students and even advanced performers who desire to go beyond the `what' ofguitar technique and delve into its `whys' and `hows', this may well be thedefinitive text. Book excerpt: The premise of Kitharologus is that Guitar technique is made up of a limited number of procedures with an unlimited number of applications. Therefore, a sound technical methodology is not one that tries to cover all possible forms of a given procedure, but rather one that identifies and trains the essential mechanism which makes the procedure, in all its forms, possible. Covering all grades from novice to expert, this book is certain to be enthusiastically embraced by any classical guitarist wishing to maximize his technique.

This book focuses on essential exercises for the development of classical guitar technique. All the exercises from the headings of the table of contents progress from easy to advanced in a progressive format. Although this is a book of exercises rather than a method, I have included many helpful tips throughout the book to aid students. As with all my materials, the video lessons are an added educational advantage.Intended for beginner to early-advanced classical guitar students (approximately RCM Toronto Grade 1-9). As a basic prerequisite students would have completed both Volume One and Two of my beginner method book series or an equivalent. There are a number of exercises in upper positions that include accidentals, therefore, additional reading experience is required if you wish to study the entire book. The inclusion of fingering, string numbers, and position marks should make the exercises easy to understand. The 100 open string exercises should be very accessible to beginners and advanced students alike.
