Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “A richly detailed and highly compassionate ethnographic study of a core group of black men who daily frequent Valois, a cafeteria in Chicago’s Hyde Park.” —A. Javier Treviño, Humanity & Society At the Valois “See Your Food” cafeteria on Chicago’s South Side, black and white men gather over cups of coffee and steam-table food. Mitchell Duneier, a sociologist, spent four years at the Valois writing this moving profile of the black men who congregate at “Slim’s Table.” Praised as “a marvelous study of those who should not be forgotten” by The Wall Street Journal, Slim’s Table helps demolish the narrow sociological picture of black men and simple media-reinforced stereotypes. In between is a “respectable” citizenry, too often ignored and little understood. “Slim’s Table is an astonishment. Duneier manages to fling open windows of perception into what it means to be working-class black, how a caring community can proceed from the most ordinary transactions, all the while smashing media-induced stereotypes of the races and race relations.” —Citation for Chicago Sun-Times Chicago Book of the Year Award “An instant classic of ethnography that will provoke debate and provide insight for years to come.” —Michael Eric Dyson, Chicago Tribune “Mr. Duneier sees the subjects of his study as people and he sees the scale of their lives as fully human, rather than as diminished versions of grander lives lived elsewhere by people of another color . . . A welcome antidote to trends in both journalism and sociology.” —Roger Wilkins, The New York Times Book Review

Book excerpt: Glamorous fashions, personalities, and places captured by iconic photographer Slim Aarons Slim Aarons, at least according to the man himself, did not photograph fashion: “I didn’t do fashion. I did the people in their clothes that became the fashion.” But despite what he claimed, Aarons’s work is indelibly tied to fashion. Aarons’s incredibly influential photographs of high society and socialites being unambiguously themselves are still a source of inspiration for modern day style icons. Slim Aarons: Style showcases the photographs that both recorded and influenced the luminaries of the fashion world. This volume features early black-and-white fashion photography, as well as portraits of the fashionable elite—like Jacqueline de Ribes, C.Z. Guest, Nan Kempner, and Marisa Berenson—and those that designed the clothes, such as Oscar de la Renta, Emilio Pucci, Mary McFadden, and Lilly Pulitzer. Featuring some never-before-seen images and detailed captions written by fashion historians, Slim Aarons: Style is a collection of the photographer's most stylish work.

Book Synopsis A Slim Book about Narrow Content by : Gabriel M. A. Segal

Download or read book A Slim Book about Narrow Content written by Gabriel M. A. Segal and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2000-06-02 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A good understanding of the nature of a property requires knowing whether that property is relational or intrinsic. Gabriel Segal's concern is whether certain psychological properties—specifically, those that make up what might be called the "cognitive content" of psychological states—are relational or intrinsic. He claims that content supervenes on microstructure, that is, if two beings are identical with respect to their microstructural properties, then they must be identical with respect to their cognitive contents. Segal's thesis, a version of internalism, is that being in a state with a specific cognitive content does not essentially involve standing in any real relation to anything external. He uses the fact that content locally supervenes on microstructure to argue for the intrinsicness of content. Cognitive content is fully determined by intrinsic, microstructural properties: duplicate a subject in respect to those properties and you duplicate their cognitive contents. The book, written in a clear, engaging style, contains four chapters. The first two argue against the two leading externalist theories. Chapter 3 rejects popular theories that endorse two kinds of content: "narrow" content, which is locally supervenient, and "broad" content, which is not. Chapter 4 defends a radical alternative version of internalism, arguing that narrow content is a variety of ordinary representation, that is, that narrow content is all there is to content. In defending internalism, Segal does not claim to defend a general philosophical theory of content. At this stage, he suggests, it should suffice to cast reasonable doubt on externalism, to motivate internalism, and to provide reasons to believe that good psychology is, or could be, internalist.

Book excerpt: “Page after page reveals an unreal world. . . . Socialites in their mansions, film stars by their pools. . . . Aarons earned the trust of the very rich—Jackie Kennedy, Princess Grace of Monaco, Imelda Marcos—and the very famous—Cary Grant, Marilyn Monroe, Errol Flynn—as well as a passing parade of young women at play on yachts, at exclusive beach resorts or in their expensive homes.” —The Guardian Slim Aarons: Women explores the central subject of Slim Aarons’s career—the extraordinary women from the upper echelons of high society, the arts, fashion, and Hollywood. The book presents the women who most influenced Aarons’s life and work—and the other remarkable personalities he photographed along the way—including Audrey Hepburn, the Duchess of Windsor, Diana Vreeland, Esther Williams, Marianne Faithful, and Marlene Dietrich, all featured in unforgettable photographs. The collection contains more than 250 images, the majority of which have not appeared in previous books, along with detailed captions written by one of Aarons’s closest colleagues, Laura Hawk. Hawk writes in her introduction, “Slim’s visual narratives give us an intime glimpse into the world of the upper classes and their rituals in the pursuit of leisure. That his half century of work continues to captivate successive generations of admirers—and that this is the fifth book published of his photography—reveals not only a yearning for an irretrievable time gone by but also a universal fascination with the seeming forbidden worlds of wealth and privilege.” Showcasing beautiful women at their most glamorous in some of the most dazzling locations across the globe, Slim Aarons: Women is a fresh look at the acclaimed photographer through the muses who inspired his most incredible photographs.

Book excerpt: The author that brought black literature to the streets is back. Weaving stories of deceit, sex, humor, and race, bestselling author Iceberg Slim brings us the story of a hustler who doesn’t just play the con game, he transforms it. This is the gritty truth, the life of a hustler in south side Chicago where the only characters are those who con and those who get conned. Trick Baby tells the story of “White Folks,” a blue-eyed, light-haired, con artist whose pale skin allows him to pass in the streets as a white man. Folks is tormented early in life, rejected by other children and branded a “Trick Baby,” the child conceived between a hooker and her trick. Refusing to abandon his life in the ghetto and a chance at revenge, Folks is taken under the wing of an older mentor, Blue. What happens next is not to be believed. Iceberg Slim’s story is now depicted in a major motion picture distributed worldwide. Iceberg Slim: Portrait of a Pimp shows Slim’s transformation from pimp to the author of seven classic books.
