Book excerpt: Saman is a story filtered through the lives of its feisty female protagonists and the enigmatic "hero" Saman. It is at once an exposé of the oppression of plantation workers in South Sumatra, a lyrical quest to understand the place of religion and spirituality in contemporary lives, a playful exploration of female sexuality and a story about love in all its guises, while touching on all of Indonesia's taboos: extramarital sex, political repression and the relationship between Christians and Muslims. Saman has taken the Indonesian literary world by storm and sold over 100,000 copies in the Indonesian language, and is now available for the first time in English. ABOUT THE AUTHOR Ayu Utami was born in Bogor, grew up in Jakarta and obtained her bachelor degree in Literature Studies from University of Indonesia. She worked as a journalist for Matra, Forum Keadilan, and D&R. Not long after the New Order regime closed Tempo, Editor, and Detik, she participated in the founding of Indonesia's Alliance of Independent Journalists to protest the closure of those three weeklys. Currently she is working for the cultural journal Kalam, and at Teater Utan Kayu. Saman was awarded the Prince Claus Award in the year 2000.

Book excerpt: The Upanisads are the central scriptures of Hinduism. They represent some of the most important literary products in the history of Indian culture and religion, both because they played a critical role in the development of religious ideas in India and because they are our greatest source forthe religious, social, and intellectual history of ancient India. Composed at a time of great social, economic, and religious change, the Upanisads document the transition from the archaic ritualism of the Veda into new religious ideas and institutions. The first major English translation of the ancient Upanisads for over half a century, Olivelle's work incorporates the most recent historical and philological scholarship. The introduction and detailed notes make this edition ideal for the non-specialist as well as for students of Indianreligions.

Book excerpt: You know that awful moment when you realize you accidentally slept with your best friend's older brother? I met him on my last New Year's Eve in New York. Sparks flew. Madness ensued. And after the hottest night of my life, I ran out on him. Three years later he and I come face-to-face again. Now do I not only learn his name but realize the heat between us hasn't dissipated for a second. Thankfully, I'm a woman who can spot his type from miles away. Especially when my friend goes on to explain just how off-limits her older brother is. A player who has wrecked her friends' hearts a time or twenty. He doesn't agree. In fact, the gorgeous and persistent man believes we should pick up exactly where we left off three years ago. Sorry, not gonna happen. My life is already filled with more chaos than I can handle and the last thing I need is some hot playboy adding to it. Only he turns out to be so much more than I expected. Intoxicating and impossible to resist-all over my place, his stairs, it doesn't matter. We're insatiable. Now I just have to figure out how to keep my heart out of the game. Not so easy to do when he's determined to win it.
