Book excerpt: In this important new book, High argues that poverty reduction policies are formulated and implemented in fields of desire. Drawing on psychoanalytic understandings of desire, she shows that such programs circulate around the question of what is lacking. Far from rational responses to measures of need, then, the politics of poverty are unconscious, culturally expressed, mutually contradictory, and sometimes contrary to self-interest. Based on long-term fieldwork in a Lao village that has been the subject of multiple poverty reduction and development programs, High's account looks at implementation on the ground. While these efforts were laudable in their aims of reducing poverty, they often failed to achieve their objectives. Local people received them with suspicion and disillusionment. Nevertheless, poverty reduction policies continued to be renewed by planners and even desired locally. High relates this to the force of aspirations among rural Lao, ambivalent understandings of power and the "post-rebellious" moment in contemporary Laos.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beginning in 1812, this fictional biography follows the life of Henriette Delille, a free woman of color who founded the Sisters of the Holy Family. This examination recounts her spiritual journey and struggle to break free from French Quarter society, despite her family’s protests. Instead, she chose to focus on the needs of the less fortunate, teaching such principles as chastity and obedience, until her death in 1862. Today the Catholic Church is considering the Venerable Henriette Delille for sainthood, making her the first African American in North America to receive such an honor. Her story provides a glimpse of what life was like in the French Quarter during the nineteenth century and offers enlightenment on voodoo traditions and the plaçage system.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inquiries into marital patterns can serve as an effective lens to analyze social structures and material cultures not only on the question of sexuality, but also on the nature of a private citizen’s engagement with state and law. Through ethnographic research in courtrooms, community, and kinship spaces, the author outlines the transformations in material culture and political economy that have led to renewed negotiations on the institution of marriage in North India, especially in legal spaces. Tracing organically evolving notions of sexual consent and legal subjectivity, Courting Desire underlines how non-normative decisions regarding marriage become possible in a region otherwise known for high instances of honor killings and rigid kinship structures. Aspirations for consensual relationships have led to a tentative attempt to forge relationships that are non-normative but grudgingly approved after state intervention. The book traces this nascent and under-explored trend in the North Indian landscape.
