Book excerpt: What role does the interpretation of Scripture play in theological construction? In Reading the Decree David Gibson examines the exegesis of election in John Calvin and Karl Barth, and considers the relationship between election and Christology in their thought. He argues that for both Calvin and Barth their doctrine of election and its exegetical moorings are christologically shaped, but in significantly different ways. Building on Richard A. Muller's conceptual distinction between Calvin's soteriological christocentrism and Barth's principial christocentrism, Gibson carefully explores their exegesis of the topics of Christ and election, and the election of Israel and the church. This distinction is then further developed by showing how it has a corresponding hermeneutical form: extensive christocentrism (Calvin) and intensive christocentrism (Barth). By focussing on the reception of biblical texts Reading the Decree draws attention to the neglected exegetical foundations of Calvin's doctrine of election, and makes a fresh contribution to current debates over election in Barth's thought. The result is a study which will be of interest to biblical scholars, as well as historical and systematic theologians alike.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Unconditionally loving. Sovereign over all. How can God be sovereign over all things and loving towards all people while His creatures possess real freedom and responsibility for their choices? Theologians have wrestled with this question for centuries. But have our attempted solutions made the problem worse? In Wonderful Decree, Travis James Campbell suggests we cannot solve the problem by sacrificing either divine sovereignty and goodness on one hand or human responsibility on the other. While considering Arminian and Molinist alternatives, he concludes that the traditional Augustinian and Calvinist approach best allows these truths to remain in a healthy and biblically-faithful tension. Inspired by the example of Spurgeon, who preferred biblical mystery over human solutions, Campbell encourages readers to trust—even delight—in the harmony of God's love for all and sovereignty over all.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Growing up in the spacious hills of West Virginia, Sebastian Storm’s destiny was mapped out at a very early age. Tragically losing both of his parents while in his early teens, Sebastian’s fate was sealed, and a new path now lay before him. Through the destined guidance of a remarkable mentor, Sebastian learned the ways of military combat. It was quickly realized that Sebastian possessed the gifts necessary to become a soldier elite. The United States government honed his skills further and, in the process, crafted a supersoldier. Storm was called in when all others had failed. Channeling his turbulent childhood anger, Sebastian concentrated his focus toward those that wronged others, his vengeance swift and calculated, a virtual modern-day champion for those that couldn’t defend themselves. A new breed of terrorism enters the global arena just as Storm’s self-reflection of his own vulnerability is realized, but when he learns that the leader of this auspicious group has set his focus on Storm specifically, he has no other choice but to meet it head-on. The leader of this group, Tobias Teague, and Sebastian Storm have long been rival entities bred by the same training early in their careers with a bitter tragedy that defined their emergent animosity for each other. For over a decade, they have avoided each other, but now Teague has planned a horrific terrorist event that will warrant the fear of the world, giving him the respect he commands. The odd chance of meeting an intricate and unique woman puts Sebastian into a tailspin of emotions he has never experienced and forces him to reevaluate where his priorities lie and what his future may bring. Duty being paramount, Storm is Teague’s only obstacle, and he will stop at nothing to achieve his goal. Their bond strong, defined by hate, by history, and by their lethal decree.
