Book excerpt: Compared to their more sociable counterparts, shy children are at greater risk for a variety of difficulties in elementary school, including internalizing problems, difficulties with peer relationships, and poorer academic performance. Written by a developmental and an educational psychologist with decades of experience between them, this book demystifies the latest research on shyness. It offers a comprehensive and accessible guide to everything teachers should know about shy children. Topics covered include how shyness develops in childhood, the unique challenges faced by shy children at school, and general strategies and specific techniques for improving shy children's social, emotional, and academic functioning at school. Despite and increase in research on shyness, shy children are still not well understood by teachers and other school personnel. Quiet at Schooloffers research-based practices for creating safe and inclusive learning environments that will help shy students thrive.

This book was released on 2020-02-03 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'A Quiet Education' serves as an unashamed cheerleader for all that is quiet, challenging the myth that collaboration and noise should be at the heart of what happens in schools. It examines how we can ensure more introverted students and teachers can thrive and achieve their potential. It also explores why it is essential that all teachers begin to embrace quieter values: in their classrooms and management of behaviour; in sustaining their own wellbeing; in their desire to reflect meaningfully and improve as a teacher. The final section is an exploration of quieter skills: how we can strengthen our students' metacognitive ability; their ability to listen, pay attention and focus; the quality of independent work we do in the classroom alongside how we can motivate all our students.

Stairs are for STOMPING, spoons are for DRUMMING, and when my mum's working, I help her by HUMMING. Making noise is a LOT of fun ... but what happens when you take the time to really listen to your world around you? Perfect for little people who love banging and popping, and whizzing and fizzing. Laura Ellen Anderson is the author/illustrator of the internationally successful I Don't Want Curly Hair and the bestselling Amelia Fang series.

This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Eight years ago, four psychologists with varying backgrounds but a common in terest in the impact of environmental stress on behavior and health met to plan a study of the effects of aircraft noise on children. The impetus for the study was an article in the Los Angeles Times about architectural interventions that were planned for several noise-impacted schools under the air corridor of Los Angeles Interna tional Airport. These interventions created an opportunity to study the same chil dren during noise exposure and then later after the exposure had been attenuated. The study was designed to test the generality of several noise effects that had been well established in laboratory experimental studies. It focused on three areas: the relationship between noise and personal control, noise and attention, and noise and cardiovascular response. Two years later, a second study, designed to replicate and extend findings from the first, was conducted.
