Book excerpt: In order for children to achieve in math, they MUST learn to memorize add and subtract facts, and not rely on their fingers to try to figure out the answer. At last, there's a book to solve that problem! Donnalyn Yates M.Ed, teacher and memory expert, developed a successful system using pictures and rhymes along with a clapping game, and found children quickly developed instant recall. This is a book for children to read, color the pictures, and clap out rhymes. Since it's a fun activity, they want to repeat it over and over. And the best part, it appeals to every child's learning style. Try this fun rhyme for the picture on the cover! 7 plus 9 is 16. Jumping on a trampoline. 16 minus 7 is 9. Dogs are waiting a turn in line! This method has been tested in schools with amazing success and is now available in book form.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Learn how the brain retains information and specific memory techniques to use for different learning styles. The three most common perceptual learning styles are visual, auditory, and kinesthetic/tactile learners. Memorization is enhanced when you identify the learning style of a child and match it with a particular memory technique. Memory tips for math uses rhymes, stories, pictures and associations to connect the information to the meaning, and includes creative ideas for remembering vocabulary and math procedures.

Book excerpt: 1910. Pownal, Vermont. At 12, Grace and her best friend Arthur must leave school and go to work as a “doffers” on their mothers’ looms in the mill. Grace’s mother is the best worker, fast and powerful, and Grace desperately wants to help her. But she’s left handed and doffing is a right-handed job. Grace’s every mistake costs her mother, and the family. She only feels capable on Sundays, when she and Arthur receive special lessons from their teacher. Together they write a secret letter to the Child Labor Board about underage children working in Pownal. A few weeks later a man with a camera shows up. It is the famous reformer Lewis Hine, undercover, collecting evidence for the Child Labor Board. Grace’s brief acquaintance with Hine and the photos he takes of her are a gift that changes her sense of herself, her future, and her family’s future.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: `At last a book is written by teachers for teachers based on sound research that will generate enquiry based learning. It is essential for every classroom with lots of mathematical activities. These will purposefully engage children and allow for differentiation for those who require additional support to understand the number system and the more able children who require to be challenged. Mathematical standards in our schools will improve tremendously following these instructional activities' - Carole Cannon, Development Officer for Mathematics Recovery 'This book ‘Teaching Number in the Classroom with 4-8 year olds’ is an absolute "must have" for all educators involved in early number. Based on sound theoretical foundations, it offers a wealth of down-to-earth, tried and tested, effective approaches to teaching early number concepts and skills. It is a clearly a book written by teachers for teachers. Every single activity in the book is a nugget. Engaging with these activities will change your whole approach to teaching early number' - Noreen O’Loughlin, Associate Vice-President/Lecturer in Maths Education, Mary Immaculate College, University of Limerick, Ireland. 'The authors prove it is possible to write a teacher friendly/teacher useful mathematics book that connects theory and practice. This book may become the primary teacher's "Math Bible"' - Angela Giglio Andrews, Primary Intervention Specialist and Coordinator, and Assistant Professor of Mathematics Education, National Louis University 'Teaching Number in the Classroom translates years of research into a very understandable and comprehensive approach for teaching children how the number system is structured and how to think like a mathematician. For too many years there has been the perception that children who are struggling with mathematics don't know the basic facts. The reality is that these children lack number knowledge and skills. Teaching Number in the Classroom will guide the educational professional through the steps of understanding the development of "number sense", identifying the current levels of knowledge and providing instruction that helps children use the "framework of mathematics" to solve number problems. Teaching Number in the Classroom is a thinking skills approach to mathematics. Children are taught a variety of strategies for solving mathematical problems. The teacher using this book will be able to help all children develop a strong foundation of mathematical understanding' - Carol Meland, K-3rd Grade Principal for the School District of Milton Wisconsin, USA Teaching Number in the Classroom with 4-8 year olds is an absolute "must-have" for all educators involved in early number. Based on sound theoretical foundations, it offers a wealth of down-to-earth, tried and tested, effective approaches to teaching early number concepts and skills. It is a clearly a book written by teachers for teachers. Every single activity in the book is a nugget. Engaging with these activities will change your whole approach to teaching early number' - Noreen O'Loughlin, Associate Vice-President/Lecturer in Maths Education, Mary Immaculate College, University of Limerick Following the success of their previous bestselling titles, Early Numeracy and Teaching Number, the authors of this brand-new text now bring the principles and practice of their acclaimed Mathematics Recovery Programme to whole-class teaching. Central to the book is the concept of an inquiry-based approach to classroom instruction, and topics covered range from beginning number and early counting strategies to multi-digit addition and subtraction right through to multiplication and division. As world leaders in the field of Mathematics Recovery, this book's authors have drawn on their vast experience to create a user-friendly, practical guide focusing on classroom teaching. With its step-by-step approach, the text can be used as a training manual and course reference by teachers everywhere. Key features which make the book such a valuable tool include: - Real-life examples from classroom work - Teaching activities - Assessment tasks - Guidance on classroom organization and teaching specific topics - Activities for parents to do with children An invaluable resource for experienced mathematics recovery teachers, as well as all primary classroom teachers, from kindergarten level to Year three, this text will also be of use to classroom assistants and learning support personnel. Primary mathematics advisors, numeracy consultants and educational psychologists will also find it helpful.

This book was released on 2015-02-24 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Living at the beginning of the 21st century requires being numerate, because numerical abilities are not only essential for life prospects of individuals but also for economic interests of post-industrial knowledge societies. Thus, numerical development is at the core of both individual as well as societal interests. There is the notion that we are already born with a very basic ability to deal with small numerosities. Yet, this often called “number sense” seems to be very restricted, approximate, and driven by perceptual constraints. During our numerical development in formal (e.g., school) but also informal contexts (e.g., family, street) we acquire culturally developed abstract symbol systems to represent exact numerosities – in particular number words and Arabic digits – refining our numerical capabilities. In recent years, numerical development has gained increasing research interest documented in a growing number of behavioural, neuro-scientific, educational, cross-cultural, and neuropsychological studies addressing this issue. Additionally, our understanding of how numerical competencies develop has also benefitted considerably from the advent of different neuro-imaging techniques allowing for an evaluation of developmental changes in the human brain. In sum, we are now starting to put together a more and more coherent picture of how numerical competencies develop and how this development is associated with neural changes as well. In the end, this knowledge might also lead to a better understanding of the reasons for atypical numerical development which often has grieve consequences for those who suffer from developmental dyscalculia or mathematics learning disabilities. Therefore, this Research Topic deals with all aspects of numerical development: findings from behavioural performance to underlying neural substrates, from cross-sectional to longitudinal evaluations, from healthy to clinical populations. To this end, we included empirical contributions using different experimental methodologies, but also theoretical contributions, review articles, or opinion papers.
