McBeth's Randy, the Badly Drawn Horse is the hilarious picture book tale of a child's illustrated creation who (never having seen himself) thinks he's extraordinarily beautiful. Randy knows he’s a beautiful horse—everyone says so. From his silky coat to his perfect smile to his very name, reserved only for the most special of creatures, Randy is beyond compare. This laugh-out-loud picture book plays with expectations and takes you inside a child's imaginary world, through construction-paper mountains, popsicle-stick forests, and sandpaper deserts. Book excerpt: In a documentarian investigation of the major LGBTQ archives in the United States, Queer Literacies: Discourses and Discontents identifies the homophobic discourses that prevailed in the twentieth-century by those discursive forces that also sponsored the literacy acquisition of the nation. Mark McBeth tracks down the evidence of how these sponsors of literacy—families, teachers, librarians, doctors, scientists, and government agents—instituted heteronormative platforms upon which public discourses were constructed. After pinpointing and analyzing how this disparaging rhetoric emerged, McBeth examines how certain LGBTQ advocates took counter-literacy measures to upend and replace those discourses with more Queer-affirming articulations. Having lived contemporaneously while these events occurred, McBeth incorporate narratives of his own lived experience of how these discourses impacted his own reading, writing, and researching capabilities. In this auto-archival research investigation, McBeth argues that throughout the twentieth century, Queer literates revised dominant and oppressive discourses as a means of survival and world-making in their own words. Scholars of rhetoric, gender studies, LGBTQ studies, literary studies, and communication studies will find this book particularly useful.

Book Synopsis Reporter by : John McBeth

Book excerpt: REPORTER is an account of John McBeth's 40-year journey through Asia, more than half of that time as a correspondent for the Far Eastern Economic Review, the venerable magazine long regarded as the region's Englishlanguage Bible on political and economic affairs. While necessarily a memoir, the book is more a reflection of the lives of a small group of foreign journalists who came to Asia on a wing and a prayer -- and in McBeth's case by ship -- and stayed on as fascinated witnesses to a region going through turbulent times and historic change. Part-history, part-analysis, part story-telling and, in a smaller way, partcommentary on the salad days of print journalism and its steady decline under the onslaught of television and the Internet, Reporter introduces us to a diverse cast of journalists, diplomats, officials, politicians and generals McBeth meets and befriends along the way. The book deals with the five coups and attempted coups McBeth covered during his 16 years in Thailand; the Khmer Rouge reign of terror; the Indochinese refugee invasion; and the dramatic democratic transitions in South Korea and Indonesia, which helped change the face of onceauthoritarian Asia.

Book excerpt: The Sweet Sixteen was written by Collegiate Men's Basketball coach Austin McBeth. With the increase in the popularity of sports, young men and women are learning a great deal about love and authority from coaches in today's culture. The impact that coaches at every level are leaving on their athletes is greater than it's ever been. McBeth's purpose in writing The Sweet Sixteen is to start the conversation about the abusive atmosphere coaches have created, by looking at what the Bible says about love. 1 Corinthians 13:4-8a talks about sixteen characteristics of love that McBeth breaks down to shine a light on the increasing misuse of such a powerful word and how coaches can begin to love their players in a way that will leave an impact long after their playing career has ended. Love is Patient Kind Does not envy It does not boast Is not proud Does not dishonor others Is not self-seeking Is not easily angered Keeps no record of wrongs Does not delight in evil Love rejoices in the truth Always protects Always trusts Always hopes Always perseveres Love never fails McBeth says, "Regardless of whether you consider yourself a Christian, the concepts in this book will help you become a more effective leader. The Sweet Sixteen is not only beneficial for coaches, but for parents, teachers and anyone in a leadership position." Becoming a Sweet Sixteen coach, parent, or leader will be one of the most challenging and rewarding things you will ever do. Be blessed as you read!
