Book excerpt: Thin-plated structures are used extensively in building construction, automobile, aircraft, shipbuilding and other industries because of a number of favourable factors such as high strength-weight ratio, development of new materials and processes and the availability of efficient analytical methods. This class of structure is made by joining thin plates together at their edges and they rely for their rigidity and strength upon the tremendous stiffness and load-carrying capacity of the flat plates from which they are made. Many of the problems encountered in these structures arise because of the effects of local buckling. The knowledge of various facets of this phenomenon has increased dramatically since the 1960s. Problem areas which were hitherto either too complex for rigorous analysis or whose subtleties were not fully realized have in these years been subjected to intensive study. Great advances have been made in the areas of inelastic buckling. The growth in use of lightweight strong materials, such as fibre-reinforced plastics has also been a contributory factor towards the need for advances in the knowledge of the far post-buckling range. The conference is a sequel to the international conference organised by the University of Strathclyde in December 1996 and this international gathering will provide the opportunity for discussion of recent developments and trends in design of thin-walled structures.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cement-Based Composites takes a different approach from most other books in the field by viewing concrete as an advanced composite material, and by considering the properties and behaviour of cement-based materials from this stance. It deals particularly, but not exclusively, with newer forms of cement-based materials. This new edition takes a critical approach to the subject as well as presenting up-to-date knowledge. Emphasis is given to non-conventional reinforcement and design methods, problems at the materials' interfaces and to the durability of structures. High strength composites and novel forms of cement-based composites are described in detail. After a basic introduction the book explores the various components of these materials and their properties. It then deals with mechanical properties and considers characteristics under various loading and environmental conditions, and concludes by examining design, optimization and economics with particular emphasis on high-performance concretes. Researchers, graduate students and practising engineers will find this book valuable.

This book was released on 2024-11-22 with total page 713 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent Developments and Innovations in the Sustainable Production of Concrete covers the various aspects of sources, materials, and waste products in concrete production, innovation in materials-new technological developments, and the upgradation of existing concrete production systems. Importantly, it covers the so-called EEE aspects (Economy, Energy, and Environment), not touched by other books. The books also highlights the sustainability aspects of concrete production when recycled materials are added. Case studies are used to demonstrate the practical aspect of concrete production, including the machine learning approach. - Includes coverage of sources, materials, and waste products in concrete production - Provides an overview of the economic, energy, and environment aspects in concrete production - Shows how machine learning can be used in concrete construction
