Book excerpt: Since its original publication in 1965, Indian Paths of Pennsylvania has remained the standard volume for charting the foot trails forged and followed in Pennsylvania by Native Americans, documenting an era of interaction between Indians and European settlers in the 17th and 18th centuries. With the advent of European settlement, the Indian trails that laced the wilderness were so well-situated that there was little reason to forsake them until the age of the automobile. The trails that traverse the mountains "kept the level" so well that they remain an engineering curiosity. Equally as remarkable are the complexity of the system and its adaptability to changing seasons and weather. This book describes 131 paths with maps, history, significant points along the way, and information on approximating the course of the trails by automobile. Five appendices trace other historically significant routes such as the Forbes Road and George Washington's 1753 path to Fort LeBoeuf. A new foreword by Kurt W. Carr, senior curator of archaeology at The State Museum of Pennsylvania, sets the work in context and provides insight on a volume that remains valuable for historians, anthropologists, archaeologists, and anyone interested in Pennsylvania history.

So entschloss ich mich zu schweigen; vorsichtshalber bemachtigte ich mich dieser Papiere und kehrte am nachsten Morgen nach Edinburgh zuruck. Kurz darauf erhielt ich ein Schreiben von Sir Richard, worin er mir anzeigte, dass seine angegriffene Gesundheit ihn nothige, England fur langere Zeit zu verlassen; er uberschickte mir zugleich ein werthvolles Andenken als Beweis seiner Dankbarkeit, wie er sich ausdruckte. Da ich jetzt mit dem Stand der Dinge vertraut war, so erkannte ich, dass er mir mittelst dieses Briefes und dieses Geschenkes meinen Abschied gegeben hatte. Ich dachte in der ersten Zeit hausig und mit seltsamen Gefuhlen an Sir Richard;

Book excerpt: No state in the entire Nation is richer in Indian names, or in fact, in Indian history than Pennsylvania. These Indian names of Pennsylvania are full of music, but, of far greater importance, they are full of history. A History of the Indian Villages and Place Names in Pennsylvania, which was first published in 1928, is the only major book of the 20th century that traces Pennsylvania’s Indian place and names for their correct form, origin and history. Its pages are filled with the most incredible collection of information ever assembled on the Indian villages of Pennsylvania and their Indian place names and is an Indian history scholar’s delight. In preparing his book, Dr. Donehoo researched every available source of printed material about Indian place names in Pennsylvania. He also walked nearly every Indian trail, from the Delaware to the Ohio, using early trader’s journals and maps as his guide, to seek out the places the Indians lived. Each Indian name comes complete with historical notes by the author. The book includes a list of all the sources used to authenticate each Indian place name. An excellent bibliography follows at the conclusion of the work along with appendixes listing: the Indian villages of New York destroyed by General Sullivan’s army in 1779, prehistoric works in Pennsylvania by county, and an alphabetical listing of all Indian named places in each county.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Four-Mile Run, located near the town of Ligonier, PA, was the scene of many conflicts and captures during the time from 1760 through 1790. The story of the (Kneisle) Nicely family is just one of stories from this area. The Knusli Mennonite ancestors originated in Zurich Switzerland and traveled through London to Philadelphia and then to Lancaster, PA in 1717. The (Kneisle) Nicely descendant line moved to a homestead near Four-Mile Run Circa 1761. This book covers their journeys and the Indian capture of Jacob Kneisle. It is a remarkable story covering his capture, his life as a Native American, and the reunion of his descendants with the Nicely family 228 years after his capture. Nicely presents several other capture stories to give the reader a historic view of the dangerous conditions that existed around Four-Mile Run during the Revolutionary War. His interest in genealogy led him to the capture of Jacob Kneisle (Nicely), known by his Native American name of Tsu-Ka-We or Crow.
