Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Buddhist saint Nāgārjuna, who lived in South India in approximately the second century CE, is undoubtedly the most important, influential, and widely studied Mahāyāna Buddhist philosopher. His many works include texts addressed to lay audiences, letters of advice to kings, and a set of penetrating metaphysical and epistemological treatises. His greatest philosophical work, the Mūlamadhyamikakārikā--read and studied by philosophers in all major Buddhist schools of Tibet, China, Japan, and Korea--is one of the most influential works in the history of Indian philosophy. Now, in The Fundamental Wisdom of the Middle Way, Jay L. Garfield provides a clear and eminently readable translation of Nāgārjuna's seminal work, offering those with little or no prior knowledge of Buddhist philosophy a view into the profound logic of the Mūlamadhyamikakārikā. Garfield presents a superb translation of the Tibetan text of Mūlamadhyamikakārikā in its entirety, and a commentary reflecting the Tibetan tradition through which Nāgārjuna's philosophical influence has largely been transmitted. Illuminating the systematic character of Nāgārjuna's reasoning, Garfield shows how Nāgārjuna develops his doctrine that all phenomena are empty of inherent existence, that is, than nothing exists substantially or independently. Despite lacking any essence, he argues, phenomena nonetheless exist conventionally, and that indeed conventional existence and ultimate emptiness are in fact the same thing. This represents the radical understanding of the Buddhist doctrine of the two truths, or two levels of reality. He offers a verse-by-verse commentary that explains Nāgārjuna's positions and arguments in the language of Western metaphysics and epistemology, and connects Nāgārjuna's concerns to those of Western philosophers such as Sextus, Hume, and Wittgenstein. An accessible translation of the foundational text for all Mahāyāna Buddhism, The Fundamental Wisdom of the Middle Way offers insight to all those interested in the nature of reality.

Book excerpt: ..".a book by a true Bodhisattva - an awake awakening being - who brings his compassion and insight to those with troubled hearts everywhere." Rev. Saigyo Terrance Keenan, author of "St. Nadie in Winter: Zen Encounters with Loneliness" ..".the hitch-hiker's guide to no-bullshit Buddhism." Alastair McIntosh, author of "Soil and Soul" "A fine dharma book. Rich in anecdote, it guides the reader on a radical path of awakening." Roshi Joan Halifax, Founder and Abbot of Upaya Zen Center 'Not Everything Is Impermanent' explores what it means to be a fallible human being in an imperfect world. It shows us how we can live a joyful and meaningful life supported by faith, compassion and wisdom. David Brazier points to the mystical core of Buddhism by bringing together the devotional heart teachings of Pureland and the paradoxical wisdom of Zen. His writings are grounded in a sound understanding of Buddhist doctrine, decades of spiritual practice and experience, and an ease in speaking to ordinary people about the problems we all encounter in our everyday lives. This is a book for theperson swimming through the ocean of samsara, calling out for light and assistance. It encourages us to look deeply and fearlessly beyond our immediate concerns and to aspire towards becoming true Bodhisattvas. The author is not afraid of controversy. Along the way he presents a critique of mindfulness and reinterpretations of some classic Buddhist teachings. His arguments are presented robustly, and we are encouraged to enjoy the debate and to agree or disagree with equal passion. Above all, this is a reassuring book. It doesn't flinch from looking at the difficulties and pain we encounter in life, but it shows us how even when alone we are connected, even in the midst of change we can rely upon our deepest intuition that transcends impermanence. This settled faith empowers us to reach outwards with compassion into the world, just as it is, just as we are. As he says, "At the core of all is love."

Book excerpt: As with many other counties, the railway network of Hampshire has diminished to a shadow of its former size over the last two generations. It was not simply the effects of the famous Beeching report that rendered the various routes extinct, but also the actions of the operators themselves. They had already begun to take measures to reduce the number of lines operating, with closures taking place in almost every decade from the 1910s through to the 1970s. As a result of these changes, Hampshire now boasts an impressive network of closed lines, most of which are covered within this book, with stunning vistas capturing their final days as moribund railways. This new album takes readers on a lovely journey back to a time within living memory when the last vestiges of a larger network were still in existence. Compiled by well-known railway historian Jeffery Grayer, this book will be essential reading for all enthusiasts.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Lord Buddha's world acclaimed, unassailable and ever- excelling prajna (pradnya) was haunting the author ever since. Pradnya has been ever escalated by an ordinary man to a Divine-Pitch never to be dislodged there from. This is not a myth; in fact it has been a vivid extraordinary human effort. Study of human evolution unfolds that we evolve, evolve and evolve over many centuries. It holds a challenge even today to modern organized scientific knowledge, how could life of such organized wisdom evolve in an early period of human evolution. The author has ventured to delve into a challenging subject. Does this mean that the Buddha could possibly stir and activate every possible brain neuron to design an impeccable human behavioral model ahead of many centuries which is not yet excelled? My book is innovative, inspiring, thought-provoking and confidence building, the only one first of its kind and attracts attention at once. Although, "The Kingdom of righteousness" was proclaimed by the Blessed One, some 500-600 years before Christian era, yet that remained obscured from the public glare for a long time. Until Sir Edvin Arnold released his poem "Light of Asia" in July 1879 in London, which flashed on a Master mind from Asia, second to none. "The Light of Asia" brought forth the reformer philosophy of a giant from Asia, which raised expectations of understanding of hope, belief of empire and gave a completely new impetus to the History of World thought. It revolutionized traditional thinking by shaking its very foundation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new English translation of the founding text of the Madhyamaka (Middle Way) school of Buddhism, with the Tibetan version of the text included. The Root Stanzas holds an honored place in all branches of Tibetan Buddhism, as well as in the Buddhist traditions found in China, Japan, and Korea, because of the way it develops the seminal view of emptiness (shunyata), which is crucial to understanding Mahayana Buddhism and central to its practice. It is prized for its pithy and pointed arguments that show that things lack intrinsic being and thus are “empty” (shunya). They abide in the Middle Way, free from the extremes of permanence and annihilation.
