Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "From Lack to Excess analyzes the narrative and rhetorical structures of Latin American colonial texts by establishing a dialogue with studies on minority discourse, minor literatures, and postcolonial theory. After reviewing the main contributions and limitations of Transatlantic, Early Modern, and Postcolonial studies for the interpretation of Latin American colonial textualities, Martinez-San Miguel takes as a point of departure the subtle yet pervasive semantic link between the terms "minority" and "colonialism" prevalent in current studies on ethnic and sexual identities. She then engages the disciplinary debate between Colonial Latin American studies and Early Modern, Transatlantic, and Postcolonial studies, paying attention to the epistemic and institutional junctures that explain the current reconfiguration of these fields." "As an alternative to an exhausted debate, Martinez-San Miguel uses Gilles Deleuze and Felix Guattari's notion of a "minor literature," along with current studies on minority discourse to propose new close readings of texts by Hernan Cortes, Alvar Nunez Cabeza de Vaca, the Inca Garcilaso de la Vega, Carlos de Siguenza y Gongora, and Sor Juana Ines de la Cruz. From Lack to Excess traces a discursive voyage that configures a linguistic matrix from the initial lack of language to the excessive Baroque representation of American reality."--BOOK JACKET.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Discussing the worldwide problem of overweight pets, this comprehensive writing explains how behavior—both of pets and people—is a critical aspect of any proper diet. It discusses how pets are poorly adapted to cope with a constant excess of soluble carbohydrate, a common feature found in the majority of dry kibble diets. Therefore, this reference shows how, oftentimes while pet owners believe that they are providing the best nutrition for their pets, they are actually silently robbing their companions of health and longevity in their failure to restrict carbohydrates. In response to this situation this informative book draws on anthropology, genetics, and behavior to establish logical nutrition, thereby educating pet owners on how they can improve the length and quality of their pets' lives.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Postcolonial Lack reconvenes dialogue between Lacanian psychoanalysis and postcolonial theory in order to expand the range of cultural analyses of the former and make the latter theoretically relevant to the demands of contemporary narratives of othering, exclusion, and cultural appropriation. Seeking to resolve the mutual suspicion between the disciplines, Gautam Basu Thakur draws out the connections existing between Lacan's teachings on subjectivity and otherness and writings of postcolonial and decolonial theorists such as Gayatri Spivak, Frantz Fanon, and Homi Bhabha. By developing new readings of the marginalized other as radical impasse and pushing the envelope on neoliberal identity politics, the book moves postcolonial studies away from the perennial topic of identity and difference and into examining the form and function of the other as excess—surplus and/or lack—in colonial and postcolonial literature, film, and social discourse. Looking at writings by Mahasweta Devi, Amitav Ghosh, Leila Aboulela, Narayan Gangopadhyay, Katherine Boo, and films by Gillo Pontecorvo , Clint Eastwood, Ryan Coogler (Black Panther), and Tony Gatlif, Basu Thakur highlights a new set of ethical and political considerations emerging as a direct result of this shift and stakes a fundamental rethinking of postcoloniality through what he calls the "politics of ontological discordance."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Starting with Marx and Freud, scholars have attempted to identify the primary ethical challenge of capitalism. They have named injustice, inequality, repression, exploitative empires, and capitalism's psychic hold over all of us, among other ills. Nimi Wariboko instead argues that the core ethical problem of capitalism lies in the split nature of the modern economy, an economy divided against itself. Production is set against finance, consumption against saving, and the future against the present. As the rich enjoy their lifestyle, their fellow citizens live in servitude. The economy mimics the structure of our human subjectivity as Saint Paul theorizes in Romans 7: the law constitutes the subject as split, traversed by negativity. The economy is split, shot through with a fundamental antagonism. This fundamental negativity at the core of the economy disturbs its stability and identity, generating its destructive drive. The Split Economy develops a robust theoretical framework at the intersection of continental philosophy, psychoanalytic theory, theology, and political economy to reveal a fundamental dynamic at the heart of capitalism.
