Book excerpt: Herein is a most discriminating study of the basic differences between historic Calvinism and Arminianism and the developments in both theological traditions that have created the mounting barriers to the understanding of each other’s position. Dr. Wynkoop deals authoritatively with the critical issues, and incisively cuts through the prevalent fuzzy theological concepts, but all with delicacy and understanding. The monumental contribution of John Wesley in defining the doctrine of sanctification is a key emphasis in the book, along with the central issue of Christian assurance. Paper.

Book excerpt: This text places Wynkoop's work in its necessary historical context. Among the critical understandings that Tredoux reveals is not only Wynkoop's commitment to Scripture but also her clarity on the nature of biblical authority as the foundation of her work. This carity helped to keep the doctrine of hoiness as preached in the Church of the Nazarene from becoming truncated by parochial narrowness. This clarity also gave her freedom to see something deeper than a quantitative understanding of two works of grace but, rather, holiness as dynamic, relational maturation in the likeness of Jesus toward the goal of reflecting the image of God. I urge pastors to study this text and thereby to grow in our knowledge, understanding, and articulation of holiness and particularly of the doctrine of entire sanctification. I am grateful to Paster Tredoux for the gift of this scholarship. Jeren Rowell, District Superintendent, Kansas City District, Church of the Nazarene.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Whether man has free will continues to be a hot topic among Bible teachers and theologians. After defining the issues involved, from both a worldview and a biblical standpoint, this work devotes three chapters to exploring the single-volume treatments against free will by the great theologians Luther, Calvin, and Edwards. The author then responds to the major issues involved in their objections to free will: foreknowledge and necessity, human depravity and the grace of God, the sovereignty and all-encompassing providence of God, and Edwards's rationalistic argument. In each instance, the doctrine of free will, rightly understood, is in full and biblical accord with these concerns. A concluding chapter summarizes and expresses the bottom-line differences in the doctrine of salvation between the Arminian and the Calvinistic wings of reformed theology.
