Book excerpt: When watching the evening news you can be led to believe that most slip and fall claims are bogus and nothing more than a scam designed to fleece business owners and the insurance industry for money. But not all Plaintiffs are scam artists, and not all victims are seeking to cash in on their injury. Falls can affect each of us. The next victim could be your mother, your brother, your spouse or child…and oh yes, even you! The truth of the matter is, each year millions of personal injury lawsuits are filed by victims of a slip, trip and fall accidents, most of which are settled out of court. However, over the past decade there has been a noticeable rise in the average settlement as well as jury verdicts. As an expert witness, Russell J. Kendzior has been retained in more than 700 slip, trip, and fall lawsuits and has now compiled over 50 of his top cases in Floored! Rather than debate the truth behind slip, trip and fall litigation Kendzior sets the record straight and provides the reader with a behind the curtain view of the people filing these lawsuits and the companies being sued. This book is a great resource that explains what can be done to prevent the injury and thus the lawsuit through the eyes of a safety expert and stories of real-world victims.

Book excerpt: In October 2008, as the U.S. economy plunged, the Federal Reserve began paying interest on banks' reserve balances. The resulting switch to a "floor system" of monetary control, in which changes in the interest rate on reserves, rather than reserve creation or destruction, became the Fed's chief tool for influencing economic activity, was to have far-reaching consequences--almost all of them regrettable. Besides intensifying the downturn by causing banks to hoard reserves, the floor system all but destroyed the market for unsecured interbank loans that had been banks' ordinary "first resort" source of last-minute liquidity. By depriving the Fed's asset purchases of the ability to stimulate investment and spending, it also compelled the Fed to compensate by purchasing assets on an unprecedented scale. All of this resulted in a substantial increase in the Fed's role in allocating scarce credit. Finally, by severing the ordinary connection between the stance of monetary policy and the extent of the Fed's asset holdings, the floor system risks turning the Fed's balance sheet into a fiscal-policy playground. Floored! offers a matchless account of our post-crisis monetary system's history and shortcomings.

Book excerpt: Erin Upton is too embarrassed to tell the cops what she was really doing while her townhouse was burglarized, especially since the first officer on the scene is former nuisance next door Charlie Dwyer. Where's the justice in the world when a neighborhood know-it-all grows up to be six-foot-three inches of solid muscle with gorgeous blue eyes and a slow, sexy please-arrest-me-now-officer smile? It's bad enough she's wearing her robe and slippers—did he have to notice her fuzzy hand cuffs on the bathroom sink? He's arrogant as he ever was, which is fine by her—she's too busy with her dance studio's grand opening to make time for a man. But they keep crossing paths, and when Charlie offers to help her put in new flooring at the studio one night, things go from hammering nails to hammering each other in a hurry. And about those hand cuffs… They agree it's a one-time thing. But when that becomes a two-time thing, then a three-time thing, Erin starts to wonder if maybe she and Charlie could be a life-time thing. Her best friends Mia and Coco found love in unexpected places. Is it finally her turn?
