Book excerpt: While serving in a Russian village, Jason Butler saw an orphan eating an orange peel. There was little else to eat. Grieving and angry, he asked himself what he could do. What he should do. The only way to make a difference, he concluded, was to move to the village and live among the orphans. Such a move would cost Jason's career, future, and life. So, like most of us would, he chose not to take the risk. Unlike many of us, Jason's initial failure to trust God haunted him and eventually changed his life. In Dangerous Presence, Jason Butler tells how God gave him a second chance to follow Jesus into the hard places and how he learned that the Christian who ministers among the oppressed becomes a danger to the powers of injustice. Butler weaves biblical narrative and real-life stories of urban ministry into a call for Christians to become a dangerous presence to the forces of injustice in the cities of America and around the world.

Book excerpt: A comprehensive and accessible textbook which explores the traditions and beliefs of the world’s living religions – the fully updated and revised new edition The World Religions Reader is an inclusive, student-friendly examination of the history, teaching, practices, and appeal of the world’s major religions. Covering both the fundamentals and complexities of each religious tradition, this popular textbook brings together significant texts from scriptures and scholars, as well as writings from philosophers and other significant thinkers throughout history. Students are provided with an introduction and overview of the tradition, taken through its primary texts, and presented with a text which seeks to persuade the student of the tradition’s merits. This new edition has been thoroughly updated to be even more accessible for students new to interreligious engagement and to reflect current trends and developments in religions worldwide. Every chapter opens with a substantial overview which orients the new student and then flows into a carefully chosen set of texts - a regular textbook is now combined with a Reader. New content examines areas such as the Rastafarian tradition, while revised chapters cover secular humanism and indigenous and emerging religious traditions. The methodology of the book focuses on an empathetic approach – representing each tradition from the perspective of a conventional adherent – enabling students to develop understanding of each tradition and appreciate similarities and differences in their most typical forms. Invites students to study each tradition from the perspective of a follower, aiming to understand why the tradition is popular and powerful Explores representative passages, world-views, rituals and institutions, ethical expressions and modern outlooks for each religion Features discussions of interfaith perspectives on the role of women in religious traditions and the impact of world events and politics on interfaith communication Encourages students to consider questions of truth, the relation of religion and society, and the changing nature of a tradition in the modern world Includes a complete set of pedagogical tools and instructor resources, including end-of-chapter fact sheets, topic summaries, key term sections, and essay and discussion questions The World Religions Reader, Fourth Edition is an ideal textbook for undergraduate and graduate courses in religion, especially for liberal arts and non-affiliated colleges, as well as general readers wishing to increase their knowledge of the world’s religious traditions.

This book was released on 2005-09-09 with total page 652 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Preaching pastors, ministers, and priests know how quickly Sundays come and go. The Lectionary Commentary will not slow the pace of the weekly calendar, but it will help assure that sermon preparation begins with a solid engagement with Scripture. Designed to "jump start" the difficult task of sermon preparation, this indispensable three-volume work gathers exegetical essays on biblical texts from the Revised Common Lectionary. Covering every Sunday of the three-year liturgical cycle, as well as Christmas Day, Epiphany, and Ascension Day, the readings are arranged in canonical order so as to be of use to all preachers. Seventy-eight pastors, priests, and teachers from a variety of Christian traditions have contributed their insights to The Lectionary Commentary. Designed to answer the question What does the preacher need to know about this text in order to preach a faithful sermon from it?, each of their essays closely considers its specific biblical text, all the while remaining alert to the contemporary context in which the sermon will be spoken and heard. The result is an invaluable resource that will aid in the difficult task of facilitating a meaningful encounter between Holy Scripture and our modern world. This volume, The First Readings: Old Testament and Acts, provides exegetical commentary on the lectionary readings from Genesis to Malachi, and from the first seventeen chapters of Acts. Also unique to this volume is an excellent essay by Hughes Oliphant Old on preaching as worship. Consulting Editors: Richard A. Burridge Thomas W. Gillespie Colin E. Gunton Robert W. Jenson James F. Book excerpt: "Fate? Free-will? When Aleria Hayes gets swept into the world of the Watchers, will it be the end of the world? This novel takes the vampire mythos to a whole new level…with a surprise twist that will blow you away.” ★★★★★ After breaking up with her boyfriend, seventeen-year-old Aleria “Ali” Hayes finally feels liberated. Unfortunately, her ex’s buddies are not making it easy on her. When his friends harass her one night, a mysterious stranger, Bowen, steps in to rescue her. But just as this new relationship seems to be taking off, Ali is attacked by something far worse than spiteful high school boys. When she awakes, her eyes are opened to a world where gods still walk the earth, where vampires and other immortals fight for supremacy—and where fate may be stronger than free will. Now, Ali must decide who she can trust, and whether the world of mortals is worth saving at all. About the Watcher Series This simple beginning evolves into an epic journey through the shadow world of vampires, fallen angels, and the Watchers. This series is great for anyone who loves the romance of Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight Saga, the world building of Cassandra Clare's Mortal Instruments Series, and the high stakes of Suzanne Collins' Hunger Games. When you get to book two, fasten your seatbelt, each book is faster, darker, and sexier. Interview with the Author Q: What inspired you to write The Watcher Series? A: It’s kind of embarrassing, but it was my coping mechanism after my life took an unexpected turn. In 1996 I called off my wedding (only six weeks before it happened—but don’t worry, I found my Prince Charming later). Consequently, I was in this weird emotional state. Writing became my refuge. I didn’t write the whole book then, but I did write several scenes, chose the character names, and laid out the blueprint for my novel. Q: What made you finish writing the first book? A: In late 2008, I went back to what I had written again and toyed around for a long time. But it wasn’t until a student saw my manuscript sitting on a table and asked if she could read it that things got real. I nervously let her, dying a little bit inside. Then, she did the most magical thing—she asked if she could take it home to finish reading. It spurred me on, and I've never looked back. Q: What were your influences? A: I graduated with my degree in English and have a deep love of mythology and literature. Works like Paradise Lost, The Book of Enoch, Dracula, and The Tempest were all influences. I also had a friend introduce me to the old, cult classic film, Highlander when I was in college. This, combined with The Book of Enoch, sparked my ideas for my Watchers. (No, it wasn’t Buffy the Vampire Slayer. This was before the show ever aired. But we did use a lot of the same source material). I love the niches of urban fantasy and paranormal romance, too. I wanted my books to be a journey for my characters where they will find romance along the way, along with twists, turns, action, thrills, and a dash of mystery and intrigue. The Unintended starts off a little slower because of world building, but by the time you get to The Nexus, be prepared for a rollercoaster ride. Q: In what order should we read them? A: If you want maximum suspense, this is my recommended order: The Unintended The Nexus >> Allure (the prequel) The Sacrifice The Fallen Part 1 The Fallen Part 2 >> Light and Shadow: Watcher Series Shorts & Extras (I recommend reading “The Price” after The Nexus. The alternate point of view will change everything).

The two combatant countries India and Pakistan whose war events are subject matter of this work, should never be enemy of each other because they are not only the brothers but also the twins born at the same time and are inseparably linked by the geography of the sub-continent.
