Book excerpt: How to co-create—and why: the emergence of media co-creation as a concept and as a practice grounded in equity and justice. Co-creation is everywhere: It’s how the internet was built; it generated massive prehistoric rock carvings; it powered the development of vaccines for COVID-19 in record time. Co-creation offers alternatives to the idea of the solitary author privileged by top-down media. But co-creation is easy to miss, as individuals often take credit for—and profit from—collective forms of authorship, erasing whole cultures and narratives as they do so. Collective Wisdom offers the first guide to co-creation as a concept and as a practice, tracing co-creation in a media-making that ranges from collaborative journalism to human–AI partnerships. Why co-create—and why now? The many coauthors, drawing on a remarkable array of professional and personal experience, focus on the radical, sustained practices of co-creating media within communities and with social movements. They explore the urgent need for co-creation across disciplines and organization, and the latest methods for collaborating with nonhuman systems in biology and technology. The idea of “collective intelligence” is not new, and has been applied to such disparate phenomena as decision making by consensus and hived insects. Collective wisdom goes further. With conceptual explanation and practical examples, this book shows that co-creation only becomes wise when it is grounded in equity and justice. With Coauthors Juanita Anderson, Maria Agui Carter, Detroit Narrative Agency, Thomas Allen Harris, Maori Karmael Holmes, Richard Lachman, Louis Massiah, Cara Mertes, Sara Rafsky, Michèle Stephenson, Amelia Winger-Bearskin, and Sarah Wolozin

Book excerpt: “An exceptional work challenging leaders to question their assumptions about how to achieve organizational excellence . . . a new narrative for leading.” —Carol Pearson, author of The Hero Within If we are to disentangle the extraordinary challenges that we face today in organizations, communities, and nations we must transcend our divisions and develop solutions together. But what enables us to collectively make wise choices and sound judgments instead of splintering apart? When human beings gather together, a depth of awareness and insight, a transcendent knowing, becomes available. Based on nine years of research The Power of Collective Wisdom shows how we can tap into the extraordinary cocreative potential that exists in every group. Collective wisdom is elusive and unpredictable—it can’t be willed into being, but the authors describe six commitments people can adopt that will increase the likelihood of its appearing. Stories and historical examples throughout serve to illuminate and illustrate how collective wisdom has emerged in a range of settings and through the lives and traditions of varied cultures. Equally important, the authors describe how to recognize the pitfalls of polarization or false agreement, either of which can lead to collective folly—a phenomenon with which recent history has made us all too familiar. And they offer a set of practices to help readers maintain the key lessons of the book. The Power of Collective Wisdom is a foundational book for an emerging field of study and practice relevant to everyone seeking more effective and satisfying ways of working with others. “This book takes knowledge about groups and elevates it to a field and a movement.” —Peter Block, author of Community and Stewardship

Book excerpt: In this fascinating book, New Yorker business columnist James Surowiecki explores a deceptively simple idea: Large groups of people are smarter than an elite few, no matter how brilliant—better at solving problems, fostering innovation, coming to wise decisions, even predicting the future. With boundless erudition and in delightfully clear prose, Surowiecki ranges across fields as diverse as popular culture, psychology, ant biology, behavioral economics, artificial intelligence, military history, and politics to show how this simple idea offers important lessons for how we live our lives, select our leaders, run our companies, and think about our world.

Book excerpt: Collective Wisdom is a collection of 34 interviews that uncover personal understandings and experience of some of Australia's leading achievers. It offers unprecedented access to the hearts and souls of people who excel across the spectrum of human endeavour from Sport, The Arts, Politics and Business.Searching not only for clues to their success but also their wisdom. Brett Kelly asked 12 questions and their answers, though sometimes shocking, are always interesting. It is enlightening to understand how some in our society have achieved great goals and how they think through issues that are of national concern. These interviews undertaken face-to-face in 1998 include former Prime Ministers, Peter Brock, Gerry Harvey, Poppy King, Ray Martin, Imelda Roche and many others. As Brett himself says: "We have decided to terminate your employment." It's not a great start to the day, and it's one that I've got in common with many Australians. And for me, like anyone else, it was a shock, it was depressing, and it made me question just what the hell I was doing. It was not until later, after months of to-ing and fro-ing, when one contributor finally agreed to an interview, that I understood what it was I had been getting so wrong. The process of getting the interview - and others on Collective Wisdom - revealed some important things that I'd overlooked in my life so far, things that were so important they have changed my life direction. It was a pity that I had to lose my job to be able the have the time to work them out. People featured in Collective Wisdom include H.G Nelson, Hon. Jeff Kennett, Ray Martin, Peter Garrett, and Senator Natasha Stott Despoja.
