Book excerpt: The friendship of Jean Toomer and Waldo Frank was one of the most emotionally intense, racially complicated, and aesthetically significant relationships in the history of American literary modernism. Waldo Frank was an established white writer who advised and assisted the younger African American Jean Toomer as he pursued a literary career. They met in 1920, began corresponding regularly in 1922, and were estranged by the end of 1923, the same year that Toomer published his ambitiously modernist debut novel, Cane. While individual letters between Frank and Toomer have been published separately on occasion, they have always been presented out of context. This volume presents for the first time their entire correspondence in chronological order, comprising 121 letters ranging from 200 to 800 words each. Kathleen Pfeiffer annotates and introduces the letters, framing the correspondence and explaining the literary and historical allusions in the letters themselves. Reading like an epistolary novel, Brother Mine captures the sheer emotional force of the story that unfolds in these letters: two men discover an extraordinary friendship, and their intellectual and emotional intimacy takes shape before our eyes. This unprecedented collection preserves the raw honesty of their exchanges, together with the developing drama of their ambition, their disappointments, their assessment of their world, and ultimately, the betrayal that ended the friendship.

The repercussions of his mistake could be deadly… for him, for the ones he loves, for his people. The Brotherhood, a league of assassins to whom he owes everything, sent him to do a job and kill a senator, the author of H-30. Except, that senator had been persuaded to pull the bill, to support the Brax rather than oppress them. An enemy has infiltrated the Brotherhood to use it for themselves, sending a Brax assassin to kill the one man in the universe he should be protecting. Mal Renata is one of a handful of advocates working for the Brax, an alien race enslaved by humans when their planet was settled by explorers. Just as her tireless efforts are beginning to show results with shifting public opinion in favor of the Brax, someone kills the senator in the most high profile of ways, and the Brax will be blamed, endangering every man, woman, and child she fought long and hard to save. Mal has to find the assassin responsible and reveal him. When the assassin and the human female hunting him meet, forbidden passions flare, missions mesh, and the danger escalates. Someone wants the anti-Brax bill to pass and is willing to kill to accomplish that goal. Adame and Mal might be the next victims. They will have to outrun death to uncover the culprit and find each other. Brother Mine is a standalone, sci-fi assassin romance.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1861, as President Lincoln called for volunteers to defend the Union, Thomas Christie wrote to his father, voicing desires shared by many an enlistee: "I do want to 'see the world, ' to get out of the narrow circle in which I have always lived, to 'make a man of myself, ' and to have it to say in days to come that I, too, had a part in this great struggle." As it turned out, Thomas had an excellent partner in his quest: his brother William. Both signed on with the First Minnesota Light Artillery, working as "cannoneers," responsible for loading and aiming big guns at the enemy. The First Minnesota saw action in major battles at Shiloh, Corinth, Vicksburg, and Atlanta. But the adventurers also endured the monotony of camp life, the hunger of poor supply lines, and, in William's case, the challenges of enemy capture. The ups and downs, the doubts and thrills are recounted from their differing perspectives in this collection of letters to worried parents, a winsome sister, and a younger brother eager to join in the fight. Their vivid epistles are enhanced by the familial connection of brothers in arms who eventually did see the world--and returned home changed.

Desperate to get away from their drunkard of a father, eleven-year-old Jasper and his older brother Melvin often talk of running away, of heading north to Alaska to chase riches beyond their wildest dreams. The Klondike Gold Rush is calling, and Melvin has finally decided the time to go is now—even if that means leaving Jasper behind. But Jasper has other plans, and follows his brother aboard a steamer as a stowaway. Onboard the ship, Jasper overhears a rumor about One-Eyed Riley, an old coot who's long since gone, but is said to have left clues to the location of his stake, which still has plenty of gold left. The first person to unravel the clues and find the mine can stake the claim and become filthy rich. Jasper is quick to catch gold fever and knows he and Melvin can find the mine—all they have to do is survive the rough Alaskan terrain, along with the steep competition from the unscrupulous and dangerous people they encounter along the way. In an endearing, funny, pitch-perfect middle grade voice, Caroline Starr Rose tells another stellar historical adventure young readers will long remember.
