Book excerpt: In 1889, Broken Shackles was published in Toronto under the pseudonym of Glenelg. This very unique book, containing the recollections of a resident of Owen Sound, Ontario, an African American known as Old Man Henson, was one of the very few books that documented the journey to Canada from the perspective of a person of African descent. Now, over 112 years later, a new edition of Broken Shackles is available. Henson was a great storyteller and the spark of life shines through as he describes the horrors of slavery and his goal of escaping its tenacious hold. His times as a slave in Maryland, his refuge in Pennsylvania and New Jersey, and his ultimate freedom in Canada are vividly depicted through his remembrances. The stories of Henson's family, friends and enemies will both amuse and shock the readers of Broken Shackles: Old Man Henson From Slavery to Freedom. It is interesting to discover that his observations of life's struggles and triumphs are as relevant today as they were in his time.

Book excerpt: In the world of wonders exists a land known as Baruun... In the years following a calamity known by many names, the land of the felines known as Dásos, the realm of the Eternal Jungle, has become a target of the Prodavian Empire, who seek to use the land for their own purposes. Many have been taken into enslavement, working fields that now feed the ape-men of Prodavus, and ten years after the calamity they continue to toil for them. All but one defiant soul. A young panther woman will defy her oppressors, renew the spirits of her people and step forth into a world that is rapidly mutating beyond the recognition of its inhabitants. Rising from a simple huntress to a survivor of horrors that mold the future of the continent, the name of this brave youth will be burned into the minds of the Baruun people, as she forges her own path... This story contains a same sex relationship, anthropomorphic characters, and several dark tones and implications that may not be suitable for younger audiences. Book Synopsis Poems from Guantanamo by : Marc Falkoff

Download or read book Poems from Guantanamo written by Marc Falkoff and published by University of Iowa Press. This book was released on 2007-08 with total page 85 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since 2002, at least 775 men have been held in the U.S. detention center at Guantánamo Bay, Cuba. According to Department of Defense data, fewer than half of them are accused of committing any hostile act against the United States or its allies. In hundreds of cases, even the circumstances of their initial detainment are questionable. This collection gives voice to the men held at Guantánamo. Available only because of the tireless efforts of pro bono attorneys who submitted each line to Pentagon scrutiny, Poems from Guantánamo brings together twenty-two poems by seventeen detainees, most still at Guantánamo, in legal limbo. If, in the words of Audre Lorde, poetry “forms the quality of light within which we predicate our hopes and dreams toward survival and change,” these verses—some originally written in toothpaste, others scratched onto foam drinking cups with pebbles and furtively handed to attorneys—are the most basic form of the art. Death Poem by Jumah al Dossari Take my blood. Take my death shroud and The remnants of my body. Take photographs of my corpse at the grave, lonely. Send them to the world, To the judges and To the people of conscience, Send them to the principled men and the fair-minded. And let them bear the guilty burden before the world, Of this innocent soul. Let them bear the burden before their children and before history, Of this wasted, sinless soul, Of this soul which has suffered at the hands of the "protectors or peace." Jumah al Dossari is a thirty-three-year old Bahraini who has been held at Guantanamo Bay for more than five years. He has been in solitary confinement since the end of 2003 and, according to the U.S. military, has tried to kill himself twelve times while in custody.
