Book Synopsis Writing Along Broken Lines by : Otto Heim

Download or read book Writing Along Broken Lines written by Otto Heim and published by Auckland University Press. This book was released on 1998 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Covering the two decades from 1972, Swiss scholar Otto Heim presents detailed readings of the novels and short fiction by Heretaunga Pat Baker, Alan Duff, Patricia Grace, Keri Hulme, Witi Ihimaera, Bruce Stewart, J. C. Sturm, Apirana Taylor, and Ngahuia Te Awekotuku. His book places the fiction by Maori writers in the context of a culture of survival and traces its textual engagement with violence between empathy and sacrifice, from the privacy of domestic violence to the public arenas of systemic violence and war. He argues that out of this confrontation with violence emerges a distinctive ethnic world view created by the construction of individual experience, the development of an ideological stance and the expression of a spiritual orientation. Heim's analysis shows works of fiction by contemporary Maori writers as challenging explorations of the constraints placed on the literary imagination by the urgent facts of the human condition and the imperatives of culture.

As the nation grows impatient with elected government officials, two secret organizations develop plans to overthrow the government in what will be considered the deadliest racial battle in American history. Two longtime office friends, Nicholas Hamilton, who is white, and Thomas Hill, who is black, find themselves plotting against each other and assuming leadership positions, each supporting his own secret organization. They become enemies on the battlefield, facing off in a battle filled with many emotions, including regret. As thousands of innocent Americans die, a country divided turns to China for support in an elaborate counterattack plan to resume social, political, and economic dominance once again. The Peoples Republic of China agrees to provide enough equipment and ammunition to aid in their counterattack plan. Unaware of Chinas plan to double-cross the United States, soldiers remain on standby to receive equipment and ammunition wired with explosive devices from China. The people of the country with broken lines now has to decide if they can trust each other long enough to work together to develop a plan to defeat an attacking China.

After the loss of her parents, she’s stayed as far away from Manhattan and her parents’ hotel empire as she could—an act made easier when her brother ruthlessly cut her off from the family fortune. Closing her art gallery, abandoning her dreams, and moving across the country weren’t simple, but that was easier than grieving the loss of the two people she loved most. When her sister asks her to be maid of honor at her wedding, Charlie has no choice but to return to a city full of memories. As she faces a hectic wedding schedule and a hotel business in chaos, the last thing on her mind is romance. But the beautiful stranger she meets on her first night back changes everything. As family secrets are exposed and Charlie learns the truth about her stranger’s identity, she discovers that the only way to heal is to confront her past.

Book excerpt: In all my years as a Vampire, hundreds of them, I never imagined humans would be anything other than food. Rich, pure, delectable blood. Prey that fought back never posed a problem. Mortals couldn’t stand against those of us with supernatural ability. That world still exists, but it’s taken a backseat to humans who’ve joined forces with turncoat mages. Mortals were never meant to wield power. Over the long haul, they’re sure to be very sorry for the choices they’ve made. Meanwhile, they’re a huge pain in the rear and a threat to every type of mage, not only Vampires. Some days, I just want to go back to running my nightclub. Ascent is a “don’t ask, don’t tell” establishment. I never cared who frequented my bar, so long as they brought plenty of money and a powerful thirst for booze. Maybe someday I’ll be a humble innkeeper again, but it’s so far in the future I can’t even think about it. Nope. For now, all I see is blood. Rivers of it, and not running down my gullet, either. On the plus side, I have good friends, powerful allies, and a Vampire who loves me. We have to come through this unscathed. Have to. I’m Ariana Hawke, and I take care of what’s mine.
