Book excerpt: Imagine you are five years old. You haven't started kindergarten, and your only knowledge of the outside world are those trips to the park where your nanny, Bella, lets you swing as high as you want and teeter-totter and jungle gym to your little heart's content. Or when your sweet mother shows up by surprise and spirits you away to the ice cream shop for your favorite cone—very berry strawberry cherry, thank you very much—or, better still, when she takes you to the movies for one of those fantastical adventures on that gigantic screen. Man, that Darth Vader is one scary dude! At home you are ensconced in the space they call your bedroom, but to you, it is the universe. You designed it, and in it you are the master of all. There, you line up your army of soldiers and battle the Pteranodon, while every stuffed critter under your watch spies it all from the edge of your bed. Your imagination is king, and all is well with the world, until one night... The assault had been brutal, pure physical torture. It had shocked you to the core, left you breathless and stunned. Witless. Took you weeks to recover. But that was only your body. Where does a five-year-old take such a thing? To whom do you speak? How do you even wrap your head around such cruelty? Such pain. Such betrayal. Daddy...

Book Synopsis Man, Interrupted by : Philip Zimbardo

Download or read book Man, Interrupted written by Philip Zimbardo and published by Conari Press. This book was released on 2016-04-01 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2011, Philip Zimbardo gave a TED Talk called “The Demise of Guys,” which has been viewed by over 1.8 million people. A TED eBook short followed that chronicled how in record numbers men are flaming out academically and failing socially and sexually with women. This new book is an expansion of that brief polemic based on Zimbardo’s observations, research, and the survey that was completed by over 20,000 viewers of the original TED Talk. The premise here is that we are facing a not-so-brave new world; a world in which young men are getting left behind. Philip Zimbardo and Nikita Coulombe say that an addiction to video games and online porn have created a generation of shy, socially awkward, emotionally removed, and risk-adverse young men who are unable (and unwilling) to navigate the complexities and risks inherent to real-life relationships, school, and employment. Taking a critical look at a problem that is tearing at families and societies everywhere, Man, Interrupted suggests that our young men are suffering from a new form of “arousal addiction,” and introduce a bold new plan for getting them back on track. The concluding chapters offer a set of solutions that can be affected by different segments of society including schools, parents, and young men themselves. Filled with telling anecdotes, results of fascinating research, perceptive analysis, and concrete suggestions for change, Man, Interrupted is a book for our time. It is a book that informs, challenges, and ultimately inspires.

It tells the life story of Richard Hammond after he was run over by a train as a young boy, how his life was spared, and how he went on to live a full and enriching life despite losing three limbs. It is a powerful reminder to anyone who has ever struggled that we are not our past, our diagnosis, or our situation, and that we need to keep going. It is also a call to action for anyone who loves or knows someone who is struggling to mentor and help them. This book influenced my life so strongly and helped me have a more positive outlook on my daily life. I usually don't read nonfiction or historical books. They don't capture my attention or hold it for very long. That was not the case with Boy Interrupted. I can honestly say that this was the first well written nonfiction book that kept me interested the whole way through. I needed to find out what was going to happen to Ricky next, how he or his family were going to handle each new trial with finesse. Boy Interrupted doesn't just focus on Ricky's personal struggle. We get the viewpoint of his caring mother as well, and see the trial this was in her life. However, we also see how it transformed her and we see her true, strong character as she advocates for her son. I highly recommend this book to anyone. We all struggle, and Richard Hammond has transformed the way I view my struggles-past and present. I only wish I could have had the opportunity to meet him and say thank you." -Sarah Hoggan
