Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This revised edition of Bookmarks reflects the end of the coordination of the youth campaign by the Council Europe. The campaign may be officially over, but the education and awareness-raising to counter hate speech and promote human rights values remain an urgent task for young people of all ages. The work of the Council of Europe for democracy is strongly based on education: education in schools, and education as a lifelong learning process of practising democracy, such as in non-formal learning activities. Human rights education and education for democratic citizenship form an integral part of what we have to secure to make democracy sustainable. Hate speech is one of the most worrying forms of racism and discrimination prevailing across Europe and amplified by the Internet and social media. Hate speech online is the visible tip of the iceberg of intolerance and ethnocentrism. Young people are directly concerned as agents and victims of online abuse of human rights; Europe needs young people to care and look after human rights, the life insurance for democracy. Bookmarks was originally published to support the No Hate Speech Movement youth campaign of the Council of Europe for human rights online. Bookmarks is useful for educators wanting to address hate speech online from a human rights perspective, both inside and outside the formal education system. The manual is designed for working with learners aged 13 to 18 but the activities can be adapted to other age ranges.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Auerbach was one of the foremost literary critics of the 20th century whose work has relevance within the fields of literary criticism, historiography and postcolonial theory. The opening chapter of this book explains how he understood the task of interpretation and his role as an interpreter. The following chapter outlines the important phases in his life with reference to the writers and thinkers who influenced him in his thinking and practice. The central chapters of the book focus on specific themes in his work: the historical grounding of the ‘figural’ imagination; the relation between the secular and the sacred; the emergence of tragic realism; and the notion of ‘inner history’ as a defining feature of early 20th-cenntury modernism. The final two chapters focus on broader issues relating to the development of Auerbach’s understanding of the development of an educated readership within Europe and of his concerns regarding the emergence of what he terms ‘a world literature’.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Barefoot in Siargao is a collection of stories that the author drew on her memories of idyllic childhood summers and nature adventures in Siargao, the mystical island home of her grandparents. She writes about family life, traditional beliefs, local culture, and folklore—ayok (witches), ghosts, and balls of fire. The book was born out of her love of art, nature, literature, and culture. The book aims to open wonders in nature and deepen the human bond with the natural world. The writer urges readers to be sensitive to culture and environment and protect all creation. Readers learn about the natural heritage of Siargao Island, which is of important conservation value to the Philippines because of its coral habitats, seagrass, mangroves, and wildlife. The book is a loving tribute to Siargao, the touchstone of her family, and a celebration of the strong heritage of faith and love that her parents and grandparents left the family.
