Download or read book Beyond My Story . . . I Am written by C. Hawks and published by Balboa Press. This book was released on 2019-03-30 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At age fifty-nine, author C. Hawks feels like she is on the brink of brokenness and embarks on a ninety-two-day sojourn that takes her to quaint, often non-English-speaking, European villages. Beyond My Story is a deeply honest memoir about the author’s journey of healing, introspection, and insight into the power that our stories hold. Hawks demonstrates an ability to boldly look within and to greet her own ego and shadow self. In her pursuit of desperately needed rest, nourishment, and revitalization, she trudges her way through the story she has been living and examines the consciousness that has shaped her story. She blazes a trail for any woman courageous enough, broken enough, or desperate enough to follow. A deeply reflective journey, Beyond My Story teaches us how to open our own doors to awareness and higher consciousness. With its twists, turns, and often comedic encounters, this memoir reflects Hawks’s belief that the world needs more of our feminine energy and that it needs us to be nourished, healed, and self-aware. This is a must-read for every woman who has ever wondered, “Why am I?”

Book excerpt: Beyond the Black Door is a young adult dark fantasy about unlocking the mysteries around and within us—no matter the cost... Everyone has a soul. Some are beautiful gardens, others are frightening dungeons. Soulwalkers—like Kamai and her mother—can journey into other people's souls while they sleep. But no matter where Kamai visits, she sees the black door. It follows her into every soul, and her mother has told her to never, ever open it. When Kamai touches the door, it is warm and beating, like it has a pulse. When she puts her ear to it, she hears her own name whispered from the other side. And when tragedy strikes, Kamai does the unthinkable: she opens the door. A.M. Strickland's imaginative dark fantasy features court intrigue and romance, a main character coming to terms with her asexuality, and twists and turns as a seductive mystery unfolds that endangers not just Kamai's own soul, but the entire kingdom ... An Imprint Book “I couldn’t put down this deliciously dark dream of a fantasy.” —New York Times bestselling author Lisa Maxwell “A dark delight, gorgeously written and as twisty and enigmatic as a labyrinth at twilight. I wanted to stay lost in its pages forever, wandering ever deeper into the maze of Strickland’s beguiling, intricately imagined world.” —Margaret Rogerson, New York Times bestselling author of An Enchantment of Ravens

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this inspirational and unflinchingly honest memoir, acclaimed author Reyna Grande describes her childhood torn between the United States and Mexico, and shines a light on the experiences, fears, and hopes of those who choose to make the harrowing journey across the border. Reyna Grande vividly brings to life her tumultuous early years in this “compelling...unvarnished, resonant” (BookPage) story of a childhood spent torn between two parents and two countries. As her parents make the dangerous trek across the Mexican border to “El Otro Lado” (The Other Side) in pursuit of the American dream, Reyna and her siblings are forced into the already overburdened household of their stern grandmother. When their mother at last returns, Reyna prepares for her own journey to “El Otro Lado” to live with the man who has haunted her imagination for years, her long-absent father. Funny, heartbreaking, and lyrical, The Distance Between Us poignantly captures the confusion and contradictions of childhood, reminding us that the joys and sorrows we experience are imprinted on the heart forever, calling out to us of those places we first called home. Also available in Spanish as La distancia entre nosotros.

This book was released on 2021-09-23 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Ivan Godfrey began his career as a corrections officer in the New York State Corrections System, it was still reeling from the brutal retaliation to the prison riots at Attica. As a young African American, he grew up in the Bronx, then he worked in prisons, such as the notorious Sing-Sing Prison. In fact, Ivan often met inmates he knew on the streets from his New York City neighborhood. His memoir is a wonderful testament to his determination to strive for a better life and take care of his growing family while working in some of the most dangerous prisons in America. It is also a one-of-a-kind window into the life of a young Black prison guard as he struggled to climb the ladder of success despite inherent and overt racial barriers. Now he is an assistant professor, teaching criminal justice and behavioral science at SUNY Ulster CC, forensic mental health at Russell Sage College, and forensic social work and the criminal justice system at the University at Albany School of Social Welfare. Dr. Ivan Godfrey's memoir is an inspiring journey from the streets of the Bronx to the daily psychological and physical violence while working for over twenty years in the NY State Correction System and finally to the halls of academia.

Book Synopsis Beyond My Control by : Lee Hamelin

Download or read book Beyond My Control written by Lee Hamelin and published by FriesenPress. This book was released on 2024-04-16 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1967, when Lee Hamelin was just four years old, he and several of his siblings were forcibly removed from their Aboriginal family’s home in northern Alberta, Canada, never to return again. With the authorities labelling his mother as “morally depraved and of no benefit to society,” Lee and his siblings became wards of the government. Little did they realize it at the time, but they had just become part of the Sixties Scoop, the mass removal of Aboriginal children from their families into Canada’s child welfare system from the mid 1950s to the 1980s. While the Sixties Scoop exposed thousands of Aboriginal children to the horrors of the residential school system, Lee and his brother avoided that fate. Instead, they were placed with loving foster parents who raised the two boys as if they were their own. Lee is immensely thankful for the situation where he and his brother ended up. However, growing up in a white home as a visible minority in his community, completely cut off from his Aboriginal roots, still created many complications that he has had to cope with throughout his life, including racism, prejudice, and questions about his identity. In this gripping and honest memoir, Lee seeks to contextualize his experience within the trauma that so many other such forced abductions created and the broader colonial context within which they took place. Despite the darkness of these years, through it all comes a positive message of love, hope, and reconciliation for all.
