Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Privy Thoughts is a hilarious, biting, and, at times, bizarre collection of the graffiti found on the toilet doors of universities in Britain, Ireland, Australia, and the United States of America. Venture inside, where the thoughts, feelings, and observations of various students are arranged into categories ranging from sex, of course, to philosophy, by way of a limerick or two. For anyone in need of a laugh, a reflective moment, or just a reminder of student days, this book is a must. It veers from being thoughtful and intellectual, to being outrageously potty-mouthed, and back again. Read, savour, and smile without the need to wash your hands afterwards.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This provocative guide profiles behaviors considered shocking throughout American history, revealing the extent of changing social mores and cultural perceptions of appropriate conduct since the Colonial period. The notion of what is offensive has evolved over time. But what factors dictate decorum and why does it change? This fascinating work delves into the history of "inappropriate" behavior in the United States, providing an in-depth look at what has been considered improper conduct throughout American history—and how it came to be deemed as such. The detailed narrative considers the impact of religion, sexuality, popular culture, technology, and politics on social graces, and it features more than 150 entries on topics considered taboo in American cultural history. Organized alphabetically, topics include abortion, body odors, cannibalism, and voyeurism as well as modern-day examples like dumpster diving, breast feeding in public, and trolling. Each entry defines the behavior in question, provides an historical outline of the offensive behavior, and discusses its current status in American culture. Throughout the book, clear connections between offenses and social values illustrate the symbiotic relationship between popular opinion and acceptable behaviors of the time.

Download or read book Forbidden Animation written by Karl F. Cohen and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2004-05-28 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tweety Bird was colored yellow because censors felt the original pink made the bird look nude. Betty Boop's dress was lengthened so that her garter didn't show. And in recent years, a segment of Mighty Mouse was dropped after protest groups claimed the mouse was actually sniffing cocaine, not flower petals. These changes and many others like them have been demanded by official censors or organized groups before the cartoons could be shown in theaters or on television. How the slightly risque gags in some silent cartoons were replaced by rigid standards in the sound film era is the first misadventure covered in this history of censorship in the animation industry. The perpetuation of racial stereotypes in many early cartoons is examined, as are the studios' efforts to stop producing such animation. This is followed by a look at many of the uncensored cartoons, such as Lenny Bruce's Thank You Mask Man and Ralph Bakshi's Fritz the Cat. The censorship of television cartoons is next covered, from the changes made in theatrical releases shown on television to the different standards that apply to small screen animation. The final chapter discusses the many animators who were blacklisted from the industry in the 1950s for alleged sympathies to the Communist Party.
