Book excerpt: In its long history of performance and reception, Greek drama has been interpreted and adapted in countless ways and forms in response to and as a reflection of the preoccupations and tensions of particular historical moments. This volume continues this tradition by investigating a cross-section of theatrical productions on the contemporary American stage that have reimagined Greek tragedy in order to address the political and social concerns of minority communities. Studying performance and its role in creating and reflecting social, cultural, and historical identity in contemporary America, it draws on cutting-edge research in the field to move discussion away from the interpretation of dramatic texts in isolation from their performance context, and towards an analysis of the dynamic experience of live theatre. The discussion focuses particularly on the ability of engaged performances to pose critical challenges to the long-standing stereotypes that have contributed to the misrepresentation and marginalization of minority cultures. However, in the process it also uncovers the ways in which such performances can inadvertently reinforce the very stereotypes they aim to execute, demonstrating that ancient drama can be a powerful and dangerous tool in the search for social justice.

Book Synopsis Jason by : Henry Treece

Book excerpt: A GREAT STORY OF PRODIGIOUS DEEDS TOLD WITH THE FIRE AND IMAGINATION OF AN INCOMPARABLE WRITER The legendary search of Jason—the ancient Greek mythological hero and leader of the Argonauts—is brought to life in this novel of a pagan age. Henry Treece journeys with one of the world’s great adventurers as he escapes the orgiastic sacrifices of the mother-goddess, falls in love with the beautiful queen of an isle of women, marries the snake-witch Medea, conquers a kingdom, and wins the unattainable—the fabled Golden Fleece. It is an informed novel, beautifully written. It’s loaded with adventure, violence, hairbreadth escapes, and bloody conquests. It recreates with conviction a world of paganism in which every man was fearfully religious and in which horrors were perpetrated constantly in the name of the great mother-goddess.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the OCR-endorsed publication from Bloomsbury for the Latin AS and A-Level (Group 3) prescription of Catullus' poems 5, 6, 7, 8, 10, 11, 17, 40, 70, 76, 85, 88, 89, 91 and 107, and the A-Level (Group 4) prescription of poems 1, 34, 62 and 64 lines 124–264, giving full Latin text, commentary and vocabulary, with a detailed introduction that also covers the prescribed poems to be read in English for A Level. The poetry of Catullus is some of the most accessible and vivid literature ever composed. Yeats described his poems as ones which 'young men, tossing on their beds/ rhymed out in love's despair/ to flatter beauty's ignorant ear' and this selection reveals a writer baring his feelings on the page in lines of unforgettable force. He is rude and crude when he wants to be, but also elegant and wistful, sometimes in the same poem. Above all, he recreates what it was to be a young poet in the heady world of the Roman republic.
