Book Synopsis 65 Gradually Progressive Pieces and 6 Studies by : Ferdinando Carulli

Download or read book 65 Gradually Progressive Pieces and 6 Studies written by Ferdinando Carulli and published by Mel Bay Publications. This book was released on 2016-04-28 with total page 93 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These 65 pieces and 6 etudes are originally found in Ferdinando Carulli's Complete Method for the Guitar, op. 241. This method is the last iteration of his original guitar method (op. 27), the first modern method for guitar. Originally published as 44 Progressive Pieces and 6 Studies, the present edition (based on an edition published by Oliver Ditson Company, Boston) in fact yields the following: 56 numbered studies, 2 slur studies, 1 rondo for all positions, 4 intervalstudies, 2 studies in harmonics and the 6 (rather didactic) etudes. (Not included in the present volume are numerous short scale exercises and cadences. These can be found in more complete and thorough treatments in numerous modern methods.) These studies clearly demonstrate Carulli's familiarity with his Italian operatic heritage. They are nearly all in recognizable song forms and the compositional style is simple melody with harmonic accompaniment. Counterpoint is almost totally absent. Yet within these limits Carulli creates very fine music indeed.Great care was taken to make this a performing edition. All of the pieces fit on 1 or 2 pages. The few that take 3 pages have page turns inserted in logical places. The few fingerings presented are found in the Ditson edition and are logical and obvious. It is hoped that these pieces will present a delightful anduseful supplement to the studies of Sor and Giuliani published during the same period. They are truly progressive; the first 10 or so are in the keys of C, G or D (and their relative minors), all in first position, using mostly tonic and dominant harmony and can be learned by most students in just a few lessons. They continue to increase in complexity and difficulty through the final 16 (studies 41- 56), which are some of the most delightful music written for guitar. I hope you all enjoy working on and performing these works as much as I have!

Book Synopsis Beginning Pieces for Classical Guitar by : Lily Afshar

Download or read book Beginning Pieces for Classical Guitar written by Lily Afshar and published by Mel Bay Publications. This book was released on 2020-03-12 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, Dr. Lily Afshar has clearly laid out the music and fingerings for 48 beginning to intermediate-level pieces by Aguado, Bach, Carcassi, Milan, Mertz, Sor and other Renaissance through nineteenth-century composers. While many of these selections are set in first position for ease of reading, they are effective for teaching different rhythms and arpeggio techniques, as well as for learning to play simple intervals and three and four-note chords. These compositions were carefully chosen for their use in developing finger independence in both hands, and can be used to advance rest stroke, free stroke, arpeggio, and tremolo techniques. Dynamic markings have been added for interpretation if not originally indicated in the originals so, in addition to learning positions and note locations along the fretboard, you’ll have to pay attention to dynamic and tempo changes. Written in standard notation only, this book is ideal for private study, as a teaching and student recital sourcebook, or for inclusion in the syllabus for a high school or first-year collegiate guitar program.

Book Synopsis Classical Guitar Solos - Favorite Sonatinas by : David Grimes

Download or read book Classical Guitar Solos - Favorite Sonatinas written by David Grimes and published by Mel Bay Publications. This book was released on 2021-01-14 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, guitarist and music historian David Grimes presents 20 “small sonatas” or sonatinas, complete with detailed performance notes and bio sketches of each of the contributing composers: Leonhard von Call, Matteo Carcassi, Ferdinando Carulli, Mauro Giuliani, Francesco Molino, and Antonio Nava. While flexible, the early 19th-century sonatina form usually consists of 2 - 4 contrasting movements, here in guitar-friendly keys, making these pieces ideal for performance by intermediate-level students. In all but the most challenging passages, Grimes has intentionally kept fingering to a minimum to allow students to form their own concept of this critical skill. Then, as many bass notes in these pieces are played on open strings, the player must develop a sense of when to selectively damp dissonant tones or observe a rest— exposing and overcoming yet another shortcoming in the education of many guitarists. Most classic guitar teachers are familiar with the easy didactic studies by Carcassi, Carulli and Giuliani; Favorite Sonatinas offers more highly developed, but not yet virtuoso pieces by the same Italian triumvirate— plus three more composers in a similar vein— promoting confident, enjoyable sight-reading by guitarists of all levels.
