Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Homo sapiens have been speaking for hundreds of years—and yet basic communication still stymies us. We freeze up in elevators, on dates, at parties, under Dumpsters. We stagger through our exchanges merely hoping not to crash, never considering that we might soar. We go home sweaty and eat a birthday cake in the shower. But no more. With What to Talk About you'll learn to speak—fluently, intelligently, charmingly—to family, friends, coworkers, lovers, future lovers, horse trainers, children, even yourself. This hilarious manual, written by two award-winning authors and illustrated by legendary cartoonist Tony Millionaire, is tailor-made for anyone who might one day attend a dinner party, start a job, celebrate a birthday, graduate from school, date a human, or otherwise use words. What to Talk About is not rocket science, but it is a lot like brain surgery, in the sense that is terrifying, risky—and could change you forever.

This book was released on 2012-03-04 with total page 23 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ABOUT THE BOOK From the giggly four-year old who proclaims that he wants to marry his teacher to the pre-teen who gushes over the cute boy who sits next to her in class, your child's first crush is a new frontier, and its best to prepare yourself long before it happens. As a parent, you can take an active part in helping your child navigate his or her romantic feelings. To be a positive part of your childs first experience with puppy love, the most important thing you can do is help your child feel comfortable communicating with you. A crush is no more than an infatuation. Unlike a true romantic relationship, when two individuals acknowledge their deep feelings for one another, a crush is often a one-sided attraction. When children have a crush, they are not focused on loving the object of their affection as an entire person, flaws and all. Instead, they build up a fantasy of sorts in their minds, and spend time daydreaming about what it would be like to be together. EXCERPT FROM THE BOOK Try to find out how your childs crush is responding to him. Ask him if his crush talks to him at school. This will help you gauge the level of intensity and the direction things are headed. If his crush returns his feelings, he may be on the verge of a relationship. While you wont be able to change the eventual outcome of your sons crush, you can guide him as he navigates the unfamiliar waters of romantic feelings. The way you approach the subject will depend on your childs age. For a young child, be positive but truthful when you talk about the crush. Explain that it's normal to have strong feelings for people when you like their looks and behavior, but make sure your child knows that it's not necessary to act on those feelings. Guide him or her in making appropriate decisions. For instance, if your daughter wants to give a gift to a boy she likes on Valentine's Day, help her choose something that won't be overwhelming for either party. If the object of your young child's affection is an adult, don't be overly concerned. According to Dr. Laura Rocker, a pediatric physician, children often experience their first crush on a celebrity or an adult they find attractive. This behavior is normal, and as a child grows older, he or she will become interested in peers his or her own age... Buy a copy to keep reading! Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 14 COUNTRIES, 42 WOMEN - FROM PERIODS TO ORGASMS TO FGM. THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS OVERSHARING. 'Nimko's book is going to shift the conversation around women's bodies. Our bodies, and everything they do, make us who we are' - Amika George, founder of Free Periods Campaign ______________________ What do you do when you're homeless and on your period? What does it feel like to have a poo following childbirth? How do we learn to love our bodies again after they've been abused? It's rude. It's improper. It's disgusting. All justifications that leave women's questions about their bodies unanswered. And activist Nimko Ali has had enough of it. Following her own experience of FGM and rebuilding her relationship with her body, this important book contains the true stories of women sharing what they've always been told is secret and shameful - from east London to Ethiopia, from pregnancy to menopause. This is a call to arms. This is a cry to reclaim the narrative around our fannies and to refuse the taboos that silent us. ______________________ 'A beautiful book with such a wide range of uplifting but often heart-breaking stories. Made us cry and think in equal measure' - Pandora Sykes, co-host of The High Low 'Nimko has blown apart all taboos, blown apart the echo chamber and included all women in the feminist conversation.' - Scarlett Curtis, author of Feminists Don't Wear Pink 'There is no subject too taboo for her to tackle. We should all be talking about our vaginas and she is leading the way' - Bryony Gordon, author of Mad Girl 'Nimko Ali is heroine for our time, she destroys the notion of things being too rude to discuss' - Caitlin Moran, author of How to Be a Woman

Book excerpt: Good to Talk demonstrates powerfully why it is increasingly not so good to talk. Deborah Cameron details how talk is increasingly stylized, codified, standardized, and the subject of surveillance. Just as Michel Foucault demonstrated in the case of sex in the Victorian era, Cameron shows that there is entirely too much talk about talk' - "George Ritzer, University of Maryland " This is what an academic book should be: cool, well informed, and entertaining; a thought-provoking and dismaying study of how our everyday sense of talk as a social pleasure is now under threat from the ideology of talk as therapeutic and occupational duty' - "Simon Frith, University of Stirling
