Book excerpt: Do you ever ask yourself why the first celebration of Holy Communion that we have says nothing about the forgiveness of sins, why the Apostle Paul is very careful about the way he describes the cup as a new covenant, or why doesnt he demand that the leader of the congregation in Corinth straighten these folk out? What happened that caused Holy Communion today to become all about the forgiveness of sin? Would those Corinthians have any conception of a charge that they had caused Jesus to die for them? Paul doesnt accuse them. The True Meaning of the Last Supper: Welcoming Others seeks answers for these and other questions. Developments in church life in the first century described in the pages of the New Testamentbut also gleaned from the history of that first century and succeeding yearsmay change your understanding of Communion today.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The church is working with a shrunken Gospel, robbed of its power, limited in its scope, and unable to catch the interest of those it needs to reach. Who is responsible? More importantly, how can we reclaim the full content and the powerful nature of the Gospel itself? In this book, retired pastor Lee Wyatt looks at the crisis in the church, one he believes is caused by our loss of this full Gospel message. To rebuild our understanding he then revisits Jesus, helping us to become acquainted with Him and the meaning of his mission. Then, and only then, with this rebuilt picture of Jesus, does he revisit evangelism, and tell us how we can turn our efforts to reach around the world. Only when we have "unshrunk" our gospel can we successfully evangelize. This book will be helpful for individual study, especially for church leaders, but will come into its own when used in a church-wide study.

This book was released on 2023-05-23 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Food security is a multifaceted concept and extends beyond the production of, availability of, and demand for food. This book attempts to explore the meal narrations in Luke-Acts as a source for a theology of hospitality to ascertain Luke’s concern for the immigrant, the poor, the homeless, the hungry, and the outcasts. This book focuses on fifteen meal scenes in Luke-Acts and contributes to Lukan scholarship on meals, particularly in addressing the issue of food insecurity. Firstly, by incorporating cultural dimensions and anthropology to understand the social context of the first-century world, this book contributes a new perspective on the Lukan audience, which was stratified by socioeconomic and religious disparities in terms of privilege, wealth, and power. Secondly, this book analyzes the Lukan concern with the social structure and the social, political, economic, and religious setting behind his emphasis on the pto[set macron over o]choi and the marginalized concerning livelihood needs such as food and shelter. Thirdly, this book connects Lukan concern with contemporary theologies that include an emphasis on hunger and hospitality, such as liberation theology, Dalit theology, and practical theology. Thus, the book challenges readers and offers a few recommendations for implementations to combat hunger and destitution.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beyond the Scripture, this book delves into all other aspects of the Episcopalian service, from the vestments and gestures to the church calendar, that result in a deeper appreciation of the faith. The perfect book for newcomers who are often confused by the worship service, Welcome to Sunday is also an excellent book for those who have been sitting in the pews without fully understanding what happens on Sunday morning. Episcopal priest Christopher Webber takes the reader from the sidewalk outside the church, guides them through the service, and sends them out again when the service has ended. Webber explains the postures, the Christian year, the colors we use during various seasons, and all the elements in the Service of the Eucharist. As in Webber's very popular Welcome to the Episcopal Church, the tone of the easy-to-read book is conversational, making it useful for parish study.

Download or read book Zarathustra's Last Supper written by Weaver Santaniello and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-01-06 with total page 99 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the historical contextualization of Nietzsche's thought, focusing on Nietzsche's controversial Thus Spoke Zarathustra. The fourth part of Nietzsche's Zarathustra consists of Zarathustra's encounter with eight 'higher men' whom Zarathustra meets in succession on his path during the day. The prophet then invites each individual to his cave for the evening festivities, culminating in a blasphemous festival in which his guests worship an ass as God. Revealing each guest's specific characteristics and very distinct roles, Santaniello also attempts to discern 'who' these guests are or represent (historically) through glimpsing the characteristics specific to each representative guest (as portrayed by Nietzsche), and through careful textual analysis, comparison with Nietzsche's other works, historical evidence, and previous scholarly research. This unique exploration of Thus Spoke Zarathustra offers students and researchers alike an invaluable new contribution to Nietzsche studies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Father Dan Begin spent thirty-five years ministering among those who lived in the poorest neighborhood in one of the poorest cities in America—Cleveland, Ohio. He was one of thirteen children, full of stories of growing up in the fifties and sixties in a hardscrabble household of thirty-seven people on Cleveland’s West Side. He was a white priest who was welcomed into the homes (and church communities and funeral homes) of African-American families, as well as those of celebrities and athletes. Father Dan was irreverent, articulate, and wise. When he was diagnosed with esophageal cancer in 2016, at the age of sixty-seven, the meaning of his life and ministry came into sharp focus. “Watch me through this,” he told his family, friends, and parishioners. Just as he had always showed us how to live, at the end he showed us how to suffer and die with grace. In Lead Me, Guide Me, author Kathy Ewing describes the friendship she had with Father Dan and the profound effects his life had on her and hundreds of others by simply being an ordinary man who possessed extraordinary goodness and love.
