Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the dynamics of the relational and spatial politics of contemporary French theatrical production, with a focus on four theatres in the Greater Paris region. It situates these dynamics within the intersection of the histories of the public theatre and theatre decentralization in France, and the dialogues between live performances and the larger frameworks of artistic direction and programming as well as various imaginations of the “public”. Understanding these phenomena, as well as the politics that underscore them, is key to understanding not only the present status of the public theatre in France, but also how theatre as a publicly funded institution interacts with the notion of the plurality, rather than the homogeneity, of its publics.

This book was released on 2013-10-16 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Minorities have been part of European history and politics since the middle of the 16th Century, often seen as obstacles to state-building and later as a threat to nation-building. Traditional minorities have had to fight their own way to be able to remain in their homelands, while new arrivals have been met with rejection and were expected to return home. Minorities are still seen as a threat to peace and security and mostly as outsiders. In the early 21st Century of inter-connected societies, minorities are more than ever an issue often seen as a threat to social cohesion. This book provides the advanced student with a multi-disciplinary, informed perspective on minority history and politics as well as social and cultural issues related to minority identity and minority existence in Europe.

Book excerpt: European citizenship is still a contested concept, bringing together two notions and therefore two different debates: one around Europe and European identity, And The other related to citizenship and non-citizenship. Europe, In an ongoing process of construction, should be shaped and defined by its citizens. Young people in particular have a special interest in and concern about what kind of Europe they want to live in. it is therefore important to reflect on how European citizenship and debates around European identity could help and empower young people to actively contribute to building Europe. The essays collected here address this issue. They present the debates and findings of the research seminar entitled "Young People and Active European Citizenship" organised by the Youth Partnership between the Council of Europe And The European Commission. European citizenship remains one of the main priorities of this partnership.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Hartwell Approach to Climate Policy presents a powerful critique of mainstream climate change policies and details a set of pragmatic alternatives based on the Hartwell Group’s collective writings from 1988-2010. Drawing on a rich history of heterodox but increasingly accepted views on climate change policy, this book brings together in a single volume a series of key, related texts that define the ‘Hartwell critique’ of conventional climate change policies and the ‘Hartwell approach’ to building more inclusive, pragmatic alternatives. This book tells of the story of how and why conventional climate policy has failed and, drawing from lessons learned, how it can be renovated. It does so by weaving together three strands of analysis. First, it highlights why the mainstream approach, as embodied by the Kyoto Protocol, has failed to produce real world reductions in greenhouse gas emissions and delayed real meaningful progress on climate change. Second, it explores the underlying political, economic, and technological factors which form the boundary conditions for climate change policy but which are often ignored by policy makers and advocates. Finally, it lays out a novel approach to climate change guided centrally by the goal of uplifting human dignity worldwide—and the recognition that this can only succeed if pursued pragmatically, economically, and with democratic legitimacy. With contributions from leading scholars in the field, this work presents a original critique of climate policy and a constructive primer for how to improve it.
