This book was released on 1997-04-19 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The construction of large interferometers for gravitational wave detection is now in progress in Europe and in the United States. To stimulate theoretical and experimental work a conference was organised in Cascina (Italy), where the Virgo interferometer is being built. Review talks discussed the expected signals, covering general relativity and astrophysical aspects (binary coalescence, supernovae, neutron stars, cosmological background). Experimental talks gave the current status of the running experiments (resonant bars, prototype interferometers, satellite tracking) and of the planned ones (large interferometers, ultra cryogenic resonating bars and spheres, space missions).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At this conference, both particle physicists and cosmologists presented exciting new results, from experiments that determine with unprecedented accuracy whether the universe is spatially flat, whether it is accelerating and what the nature of the dark matter could be, to more speculative ideas about its origin, based on theories of particle physics which might be confirmed or disproved in the not too distant future. This conference convinced everyone that we are truly living in the Golden Age of Cosmology.

This book was released on 2017-02-15 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes detection techniques used to search for and analyze gravitational waves (GW). It covers the whole domain of GW science, starting from the theory and ending with the experimental techniques (both present and future) used to detect them. The theoretical sections of the book address the theory of general relativity and of GW, followed by the theory of GW detection. The various sources of GW are described as well as the methods used to analyse them and to extract their physical parameters. It includes an analysis of the consequences of GW observations in terms of astrophysics as well as a description of the different detectors that exist and that are planned for the future. With the recent announcement of GW detection and the first results from LISA Pathfinder, this book will allow non-specialists to understand the present status of the field and the future of gravitational wave science.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Sixth International Symposium "Frontiers of Fundamental and Computational Physics", Udine, Italy, 26-29 September 2004, aimed at providing a platform for a wide range of physicists to meet and share thoughts on the latest trends in various, mainly cross-disciplinary research areas. This includes the exploration of frontier lines in High Energy Physics, Theoretical Physics, Gravitation and Cosmology, Astrophysics, Condensed Matter Physics, Fluid Mechanics. Such frontier lines were unified by the use of computers as an, often primary, research instruments, or dealing with issues related to information theory. The book contains contributions by Nobel Laureates Leon N. Cooper (1972) and Gerard ‘t Hooft (1999), and concludes with two interesting chapters on new approaches to Physics Teaching. Audience Graduate students, lecturers and researches in Physics
