Book excerpt: A terrified voice cried out in the night. “Who are you? What do you want? The sound of snapping twigs closed in on the five teenagers enjoying an evening around a glowing campfire at Gitchie Manitou State Park. The night of music and laughter had taken a dark turn. Evil loomed just beyond the tree line, and before the night was over, one of the Midwest’s most horrific mass murders had left its bloodstains spewed across the campsite. One managed to survive and would come to be known as the “Gitchie Girl.” Harrowing memories of the terrifying crime sent her spiraling out of control, and she grasped at every avenue to rebuild her life. Can one man, a rescue dog, and a glimmer of faith salvage a broken soul? This true story will touch your heart and leave you cheering that good can prevail over the depravity of mankind. Through extensive research, interviews, and personal insight, the authors bring a riveting look at the heinous crime that shook the Midwest in the early 1970s. Written from rare, inside interviews with the lone survivor, who broke nearly four decades of silence, this shocking yet moving story will not soon be forgotten.

Book excerpt: “Please, no! Don’t make me go back to the park. I can draw you a map. I promise I can show you where everything happened.” The lone survivor trembled as she pleaded with investigators. For over forty years, the events of what happened at Gitchie Manitou the night of November 17, 1973, remained a mystery to all but a few. Then the lone survivor broke her silence. Five teenage friends had driven to the park to spend a few hours around a campfire. By morning, four had been murdered, and only she was still alive. Gitchie Girl Uncovered is a chilling account of the strange twists and bizarre details discovered by an elite team of investigators under intense pressure to catch the killers. After spending hundreds of hours with the lone survivor, investigators, and family members of the slain boys, and by gaining access to court records, authors Phil and Sandy Hamman give the reader a what-will-happen-next inside story of the monstrous crime that shook the Midwest. They bring the reader into the deviant world of the brutal killers with an up-close look at how they think and operate. The Hammans’ book Gitchie Girl: The Survivor’s Inside Story of the Mass Murders that Shocked the Heartland rose to become a bestseller; however, both books were written so that they can be read in either sequence or independently.

As they were waiting in line, Sandra noticed a boy walking toward her who, she thought, was the most handsome she had ever seen. She felt a sense of love sweep through her. #3 When she met Roger, she was surprised at how confident he was, and he was gorgeous. They talked for nearly an hour, and he asked her out on a date. #4 Sandra began going on dates with Roger, and they were always respectful and mature. When Roger finally kissed her, she felt a small, unwelcome shudder in her stomach. She wasn’t sure how he would react if she told him the truth.

Book excerpt: 'Finding Ecstasy' is the sobering debut novel by Norman Fox. It's about growing up as an intensely closeted teenager and engaging in high-risk activities. It's about the double-lives of a group of A-grade high school students who discover the underground Sydney dance party scene of the late 1980s. It's about mental health, drug addiction and taking one too many pills. Finding Ecstasy is 'Puberty Blues' meets 'Brokeback Mountain' set against the backdrop of the emerging Sydney rave scene. It's about the real-life consequences of experiencing too much, too young. This novel is dedicated to a childhood friend of Norman who passed away as a consequence of drug addiction. It was written to help educate teens going through similar issues today and, hopefully, the people in power who think they know what's best in terms of public policy on such taboo topics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Introducing the issues of movement security: u.s. activist and author J. Sakai & long-time Canadian organizer Mandy Hiscocks. There are many books and articles reporting state repression, but not on that subject's more intimate relative, movement security. It is general practice to only pass along knowledge about movement security privately, in closed group lectures or by personal word-of-mouth. In fact, when new activists have questions about security problems, they quickly discover that there is no "Security for Dummies" to explore the basics. Adding to the confusion, the handful of available left security texts are usually about underground or illegal groups, not the far larger public movements that work on a more or less legal level. During Montreal's 2013 Festival of Anarchy, J. Sakai gave a workshop about the politics of movement security, sharing the results of typical incidents of both the movement's successes and the movement's failures in combating the "political police" or state security agencies. He also discussed the nature of those state sub-cultures. This booklet contains a transcript of that talk, and of the subsequent lively question and answer period; along with several after-the-workshop observations by Sakai. As he explains, "The key thing is, to start with, security is not about being macho vigilantes or having techniques of this or that. It's not some spy game. Security is about good politics. That's exactly why it's so difficult. But everyone will say that they have good politics. So this has to be broken down, this has to be explained." Which is what he does in this unusual talk. Mandy Hiscocks comes at the topic from her personal experiences organizing against the 2010 G20 Summit in Toronto. In this in-depth interview, reprinted from the radical Canadian political journal Upping The Anti, Hiscocks describes how her political scene and groups she worked with were infiltrated by undercover agents over a year before the summit even occurred. These police infiltrators provided information used in the prosecution of anti-Globalization organizers and participants. Hiscocks provides an honest and sobering appraisal of the practical challenge of State infiltration, and of how subsequent decisions played out in regards to the anti-G20 organizing and the repression that resulted. Hiscocks spent a year in prison as a result of these experiences, shortly after this interview was conducted.
