This chronology, now consisting of approximately 1,400 incidents that have occurred since 1968, provides a useful historical record and a data base for analysis. The takeover of the American embassy in Teheran in November 1979, and of the Dominican Republic's embassy in Bogota in February 1980, prompted a review of this particular terrorist tactic for possible emergent patterns or trends.
