Book excerpt: Vocation is often loosely defined, reserved for use in churchy sermons and ivory towers. But with a decade of experience in vocational exploration as a campus minister, Drew Tucker has developed an accessible, empowering model for reflection that centers on discovery, discernment, development, and decision making. In 4D Formation: Exploring Vocation in Community, Tucker builds on his definition of vocation as "meaningful, life-giving work for the world." Speaking directly to vocational explorers, he equips and empowers readers with the confidence and skills to examine, clarify, and affirm their purpose and identity, and ultimately to experience God's presence in and purpose for their lives. Tucker addresses four key aspects of vocation. First, vocation is ultimately where our purposes align with God's purpose in ways that are life-giving for us and others. Second, as we explore our vocation, we incorporate the wisdom of mentors, the teachings of Scripture, and the experiences of others. Third, in our vocations our convictions meet our neighbor in need, often calling forth difficult yet deeply meaningful commitments. Finally, much like walking a prayer labyrinth, vocational exploration involves clear practices, yet leaves room for the numinous. Incorporating wisdom from multiple religious traditions and worldviews, Tucker writes for young adults, who are often struggling with the confusing and demanding task of identity formation, and for anyone dealing with life transitions, such as career change, family transition, illness, home moves, and the like. 4D Formation gives readers the courage to risk deep exploration and an encounter with God in that journey.

This book was released on 1994-06-09 with total page 818 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Semiconductor interfaces are of paramount importance in micro, nano- and optoelectronics. Basic as well as applied research on such systems is therefore of extremely high current interest. To meet the continuous need for a better understanding of semiconductor interfaces with respect to both their fundamental physical and chemical properties as well as their applications in modern opto- and microelectronics, the series of international conferences on the formation of semiconductor interfaces was begun. The fourth conference of the series held in Jülich addresses as main topics: clean semiconductor surfaces; adsorbates at semiconductor surfaces; metal-semiconductor, insulator-semiconductor and semiconductor-semiconductor interfaces; devices and wet chemical processes. The 12 invited lectures assess the present status of the research in important areas and about 180 contributed papers describe most recent achievements in the field.

Book excerpt: A way to unify the micro/macro world from the point of view of the Philosophy of Existence The Horizon of Cognition is a result of transferring Zezulkas’s Philosophy of Existence into a seemingly distant area – physics. It offers entirely new and unexpected view of a number of phenomena observed in experiments of contemporary physics, and not only physics. The idea of the Horizon of Cognition touches upon many other fields, but this we will leave to the discretion of the readers themselves.

This book was released on 2013-04-18 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fascination of the Annelida to scientists lies in the beauty of their structures and the functionality of their body plan, the tremendous adaptive radiation which has made it possible for these animals to colonize almost all marine, limnic and terrestrial biotopes. In doing so they have evolved a great variety of life forms, and their reproduction and development are correspondingly diverse, with many modes and patterns unique in the animal kingdom. In this special volume recent progress in this broad research area is presented by 26 specialists, in general through surveys or treatments of selected examples. Some of them review important annelid taxa such as the Nereididae, Syllidae, Spionidae, Cirratulidae, Clitellata, and Pogonophora; others analyse reproductive and developmental structures and phenomena in annelids, e.g. segmental organs, sex pheromones, oogenesis, mating systems, sperm types, life cycles, larval settlement, cleavage and symmetry of embryos, or discuss controversial approaches to annelid systematics. The book will be of interest to all zoologists who work with annelids as well as to embryologists and other researchers in reproductive biology.

This book was released on 2013-12-11 with total page 667 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains 56 contributions presented at the 1st International Symposium on Post-Translational Modifications of Proteins and Ageing, held on the Island of Ischia (Naples, Italy) from May 11 to 15, 1987, under the auspices of the University of Naples and the Italian Society of Biochemistry. The primary aim of this interdisciplinary meeting was to promote a productive exchange among scientists from different cultural areas, and to give them the opportunity to discuss problems of common interest approached from different scientific standpoints. Although a large number of studies has led to a definition of the chemical mechanisms and of the main enzymological aspects of the several post-translational modifications of proteins, we are still far away from a complete elucidation of the functional significance of such processes. As a matter of fact, it seems reasonable that the presently available experi mental approaches and models employed to investigate the biological roles are still inadequate. The search for suitable model systems was a matter of discussion during the meeting, and will be a major challenge in the future. The most frequently employed approaches to this problem thus far have been in vitro, but several proteins reported to be excellent in vitro substrates failed to show any activity when assayed in in vivo models.
