Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a collection of stories provided from personal experiences of Stan Stoops. The stories take place on the east and west coasts of the United States, the Hawiian Islands, the Filipino Islands, and the now nonexistent South Vietnam and finally end up where it all started, in Southeast Iowa. The topics range from stories about inmates, stories about women, and the most preferred subject of all, fishing. There are a few other topics thrown into the mix, hopefully for the enjoyment of the reader. The author's mentality in writing these stories was to crowd the element of humor and to take the best out of each day no matter what the day may have had to offer. So make it a better day, and enjoy reading

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New York Times Bestseller A TODAY Show #ReadWithJenna Book Club Pick A Big Chill for our times, celebrating decades-long friendships and promises—especially to ourselves—by the bestselling and beloved author of The Guncle. It’s been a minute—or five years—since Jordan Vargas last saw his college friends, and twenty-eight years since their graduation when their adult lives officially began. Now Jordan, Jordy, Naomi, Craig, and Marielle find themselves at the brink of a new decade, with all the responsibilities of adulthood, yet no closer to having their lives figured out. Though not for a lack of trying. Over the years they’ve reunited in Big Sur to honor a decades-old pact to throw each other living “funerals,” celebrations to remind themselves that life is worth living—that their lives mean something, to one another if not to themselves. But this reunion is different. They’re not gathered as they were to bolster Marielle as her marriage crumbled, to lift Naomi after her parents died, or to intervene when Craig pleaded guilty to art fraud. This time, Jordan is sitting on a secret that will upend their pact. A deeply honest tribute to the growing pains of selfhood and the people who keep us going, coupled with Steven Rowley’s signature humor and heart, The Celebrants is a moving tale about the false invincibility of youth and the beautiful ways in which friendship helps us celebrate our lives, even amid the deepest challenges of living.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The gripping tale of a less than innocent – yet far from guilty – man unfolds as fifty-year old Pat Donaldson returns to Ireland, the land of his birth. Framed and imprisoned for a crime he did not commit, he finds himself the unwitting victim of Dublin’s most ruthless drug baron, a man who acts with impunity from behind a shield of propriety, all the while aided from a cabal of corruption. All seems lost for Pat until one sole glimmering light of hope, in the form of a young and honest guardian of the law, breaks through the seemingly impenetrable mantle of fate to secretly champion his cause. Good deeds and intentions must combine perfectly with the finesse of legal machinations to triumph over what, on the face of it, seems to be the perfect stooge caught in the perfect set-up.

Book excerpt: L.A. Cops is primarily a work of fiction; with a few exceptions, the names of my characters as well as most of the cities and counties in the San Joaquin Valley are figments of my imagination. If the reader believes that I have written about actual places, as well as real crimes, that is his right to do so. I can only say in my defense that all writers have stored in their memory-cells recollections of actual events, and frequently borrow from those storage banks ideas that eventually go together to make up a story, or even an entire novel. That’s how writers of fiction make a living; unless the work is pure science-fiction, the more closely it resembles real-life situations, the more likely it will sell, because we all experience something inside when we can relate to the characters, events, or locales in a story. I have used real situations—and in several instances—actual places in the chapters that deal with World War II. Of course, built within that framework, I’ve taken the liberty to make my characters more colorful, gallant, or tyrannical than may have been the actual case. I wasn’t old enough during that period to have had personal experiences of this nature, but some of the military individuals I’ve introduced you to may approximately match some that I ran into during my own years in the Air Force. After all, no one period in time has its own special hold on good, decent people, nor on those who have made life less than great for those they have come in contact with. You will find both types playing important roles in my book.
