Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "What is the role of the British media in our perception of warfare? Are the impressions which we glean from war films, television news reports and newspaper stories reliable? What are the issues - practical and political - involved in bringing reports of armed conflict to our television screens? Are British military institutions fairly represented, and how are enemy forces portrayed? How are ideas of nationalism and patriotism incorporated into the presentation of war?" "These are some of the questions addressed in this new collection of essays. The book is intended to provide students and general readers with a concise introduction to the main arguments and issues surrounding war and the moving image media in 20th century Britain, as well as contributing new perspectives to this increasingly important area of debate." "Among the subjects discussed are: the media build-up to the Gulf War; representations of the First World War; reporting terrorism; British imperialism in film; transmission technologies and the news reporting of armed conflict; the meaning of war-toys and war-games; and postmodernism and military history."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Peace research first emerged as an explicit academic area of study in the 1950s. Pioneers of peace research included Wright, Richardson and Lenz, and this book examines their contribution and that of the 'frontiersmen' who developed the study further, establishing peace research in its own right. Assessing the evolution, status and significance of peace research after fifty years, this novel and comprehensive book is relevant not only to students of peace research, but also to the developing debates within international relations and security studies. This is where there are real problems associated with the understanding of new problems and issues by reference to traditional concepts and categories. The book will attract a broad market in the fields of international relations, politics and social theory, as well as scholars in peace studies.

Book Synopsis War and Peace in Contemporary Eritrean Poetry by : Charles Cantalupo

Download or read book War and Peace in Contemporary Eritrean Poetry written by Charles Cantalupo and published by African Books Collective. This book was released on 2009 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: War and Peace in Contemporary Eritrean Poetry focuses on Eritrean written poetry from roughly the last three decades of the twentieth century. The poems appear in the anthology Who Needs a Story? Contemporary Eritrean Poetry in Tigrinya, Tigre and Arabic from which a selection is offered here in their original scripts of Ge'ez or Arabic, and in English translation. Who Needs a Story? is the first anthology of contemporary poetry from Eritrea ever published, and War and Peace in Contemporary Eritrean Poetry is the first book on the subject. Therefore, the groundbreaking effort of the former warrants a discussion of its means of cultural production. All of the poets in Who Needs a Story? participated in the Eritrean struggle for independence (1961-91) as freedom fighters and/or as supporters in the Eritrean diaspora. Thus, contemporary Eritrean poetry divides itself between experiences of war and peace, although one can contain the other as well. War and Peace in Contemporary Eritrean Poetry also includes an extended analysis of one of Eritrea's most famous contemporary poets Reesom Haile, as an example of the kind of extended analysis that many of the poets of Who Needs a Story? should stimulate and, last but not least, a meditation on how the author, a non-native speaker, personally becomes involved in Eritrean poetry translation.
