Book excerpt: A ringing telephone at the Lake Marion home of Rick and Terri Watson from their best friend, John Alworth, who is in China and accused of murder, sends Rick and Terri halfway around the world to help prove their friend is innocent. John Alworth is the director of quality for Water Management Technologies (WMT), a rapidly growing startup company that has developed a game-changing product in water treatment and filtration. WMT is lead by CEO Gregory Brightson, the flamboyant golden boy of the venture capital set. WMT is about to go public after the new product is introduced to the American consumer when the director of engineering and quality at Universal China Production Company (UCPC) in Changzhou, China, WMT's main hardware supplier, reveals to John the final life test has a fatal flaw. The director, Mr. Zhu, informs John he will turn over the test report later that night at John's hotel because he fears for his life if the wrong people find out about the failed life test. That fear is realized when Director Zhu is murdered late that afternoon, and all evidence points to John as the killer. He is arrested by the Shanghai police and transferred to Changzhou, where he is held in jail with no possibility of bail. With little to go on, Rick and Terri find themselves in a race against Chief Inspector Ji of the Changzhou police to keep John from standing trial for murder and a certain conviction.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, Dr Albert Hong tells his own story.Today, he is prominent in his field, as chairman of RSP Architects Planners and Engineers (Pte) Ltd. His life began 80 years ago, in a humble medical clinic in Neil Road, Singapore. In the years between, he has achieved success in business based on hard work and high aspirations. Albert Hong and RSP have grown as Singapore has grown, overcoming many of the challenges associated with a young, fast-developing nation.Albert Hong's early years were overshadowed by war and occupation. But he proved that adversity can be a springboard for achievement. His mother saved enough to finance his education at the prestigious Raffles Institution, and then further education in the UK, where he trained as an architect. In 1964 Albert Hong joined Raglan Squire & Partners as an associate. He established himself in a profession previously dominated by expatriates, fought established notions of what an architectural practice could do, and demonstrated the value of an entrepreneurial spirit. Over the next 50 years, he transformed the firm. RSP has become one of the biggest, most successful and most respected architectural firms in Southeast Asia.Among his particular achievements is to establish the firm outside Singapore. Notably, he decided to enter the India market, in defiance of conventional wisdom and the advice of most of his colleagues. Events have proved him right. For RSP, India is a huge success story. For Dr Hong, success brings obligations. He has donated time and wise counsel to numerous public bodies. Like Singapore, he believes that every individual deserves a chance to realise his or her talents and abilities. Among many charitable contributions, he has always given generous support to educational institutions and deserving individuals. This is a very human success story, likely to inspire readers planning their careers. It is sure to interest all those interested in the physical development of Singapore, and the contributions of architects, planners, financiers, developers and other professionals.

He's taken a drug that makes it impossible to contemplate his future, and besides, he hasn't given his "final" speech yet. He knows that when the governor hears about the odd goings-on in Oxford Circus, Lake City, Chicago, and Chinatown Crescent, where the tong of the Lean Grey Rats rules, Farrel is bound to be saved. So begins the most Oriental of Harry Stephen Keeler's webwork mysteries.

Book excerpt: Share, Don’t Take the Lead is a book that offers an alternative perspective on leadership. The philosophy of shared leadership is straightforward: Leadership does not derive solely from position, authority, or hierarchy. Instead, leadership is something that can be executed by anyone who has the best knowledge or skill to undertake the leadership necessary in any given situation. Shared leadership is especially relevant, for example, in empowered teams where shared leadership can be initiated from any team member at any time, depending on the needs of the moment and the capabilities of the individuals. But the notion of shared leadership is also appropriate in a larger context. For example, an individual lower in the hierarchy can provide leadership if that person is best qualified to exercise it. Shared leadership also shows how hierarchical leaders with formal authority can use empowerment to develop leadership in others. This book tells the tales of how multiple trail blazing organizations used shared leadership to build high performance. The notion of shared leadership seems to contradict many of the bedrock ideas of efficient management and effective organizations. A typical first reaction is, “It’ll never work here!” Yet, the organizations that “get it” and implement this new powerful approach tend to be more innovative and to out-perform their “nay-sayer” competitors. In fact, shared leadership is one of the most important ideas to hit business in recent years—our recent feature article about shared leadership in the Wall Street Journal is testimony to that. Shared leadership can provide a way for companies to increase productivity, quality, and flexibility while meeting the competitiveness challenge. Share the Lead provides new insights and information about how to push the organizational envelope to new frontiers.
