Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the summer of 1783, an unusual dry fog descended upon large parts of the northern hemisphere. The fog brought with it bloodred sunsets, a foul sulfuric odor, and a host of other peculiar weather events. Inspired by the Enlightenment, many naturalists attempted to find reasonable explanations for these occurrences. Between 8 June 1783 and 7 February 1784, a 27-kilometer-long fissure volcano erupted in the Icelandic highlands. It produced the largest volume of lava released by any volcanic eruption on planet Earth in the last millennium. In Iceland, the eruption led to the death of one-fifth of the population. The jetstream carried its volcanic gases further afield to Europe and beyond, where they settled as a fog, the origin of which puzzled naturalists and laypersons. "A Mist Connection" is an environmental history that documents the Laki eruption and its consequences for Iceland and the wider world. The book combines methods of historical disaster research, climate history, global history, history of science, and geology in an interdisciplinary approach. Icelandic flood lava eruptions of this scale have a statistical recurrence period of 200 to 500 years; it is crucial to understand their nature so that we can prepare for the next one. An eruption of this magnitude would surely be disastrous for our modern, globalized, and interconnected world.

Book excerpt: Coralee, who just turned sixteen, is spending her summer vacation at the Silver Wing Point lighthouse with her beloved grandfather. She loves the smell of the briny sea and the way it crashes against the sandy beach—and this year she discovers something so fantastical, so secret that she knows this will be the best summer yet. But a fun vacation soon turns into a stormy disaster when her grandfather goes out to sea and doesn’t return. Coralee must rely on the newfound secrets of the sea to save him. Will she do it in time to save his life? Book Review 1: “Very original and captivating story, beautifully written. Through Coralee’s adventures and encounters, kids (and adults) can learn that diversity is something to embrace, rather than being afraid if wat is new and different.” -- Sarah from Treviso, Italy Book Review 2: Mysteries of the Mist is a fantasy and science fiction story for children by C.A. Rand. Coralee spends the summer with her grandfather, Rigger, a lighthouse keeper. While relaxing on the beach, Coralee hears a whimper and investigates. She helps a merling named Mist who’s trapped under a rock. Coralee is repaid for her kindness with a moonstone necklace from the Sea Goddess, Kleenah. It summons the Mermaids of Nereus whenever she needs them. She’s also told never to reveal they exist, or she will be cursed. When Rigger goes sailing and doesn’t return in the stormy weather, a concerned Coralee uses the moonstone to contact the mermaids to save him. Will they be able to rescue her grandfather, or will the wicked sirens do him harm? Mysteries of the Mist is an enchanting story about a teenage girl who loves recreational activities and spending time with her beloved grandfather. C.A. Rand writes expressively, and her love of the sea shows in the scenic descriptions. I’ve learned the differences between sirens and mermaids, and I have always thought lighthouses were special, too. The illustrations are amazing, and so are the characters. Coralee and Mist behave like typical teenagers. The undersea setting is just as lovely as the land scenes. Even the Sea God and Goddess have their problems to solve under the sea. Mysteries of the Mist is a fantasy story and a delightful read for children. -- Michelle Stanley for Readers' Favorite Book Review 3: “Loved it! The story pulls you in, and you fall in love with the characters. I can’t wait to sample more books by this author and her illustrator. Your daughters and granddaughters will fall in love with Mist!”-- S.P. from Hesse Germany Book Review 4: Mysteries of the Mist by C A Rand is a captivating read that takes readers on a magical journey through a beautiful Island, an old lighthouse, and some mystical creatures. Coralee, who just turned sixteen, is spending her summer vacation at the Silver Wing Point lighthouse with her beloved grandfather, Rigger renovating the old lighthouse. She believes in magical fairy tales, mermaids, and sea fairies and always hopes to meet them at the seashore. At this time, Coralee is lucky to meet Mist, a beautiful mermaid who gifted Coralee a magic necklace in exchange for saving her life. But a fun vacation soon turns into a stormy disaster when her grandfather goes out to sea and doesn’t return. Read to know how Coralee saves his grandfather’s life with the help of her magical necklace and Mermaids. The author skillfully weaves magic into this fictional plot to create an exciting and adventurous story. The misty setting also adds a layer of intrigue and mystery to the story. Overall, Mysteries of the Mist is a must-read for anyone who believes in fairytales with a touch of mystery and suspense. Perfect for 7+ -- Kidlomag review

And when all the famous stories had already been told, it became clear that the time had come to create. Thus, the novel “The Great Mist” was born. This fantasy tells the story of love and hate, of passion and longing, of dreams and reality – all on the edges of consciousness and subconsciousness. Wonderful illustrations were made by a talented illustrator, Ksenia Tkach.
